Couldn't sleep last night so I was awake for the bear's return visit to the hot tub. I think he desperately wants to eat the Styrofoam inside. Seemed very put out when I pounded on the window to scare him off.

A totally normal potato and definitely not some kind of subterranean larva

This is the reference I was given. She wanted something like this, but without the encircling element and in more appropriate colors for a blue jay.

8yo is going as a custom character inspired by @kaydavault.bsky.social's Star Knights, and I've been tasked with building the non-fabric parts of her costume. I am pretty crummy at woodworking, but I think the staff is turning out okay.

Annoyingly, they tend to look opposite directions down what I'm pretty positive is the same street

In the spirit of the season, I decided I needed to create a Gothic Rock subgenre, which solved a lot of problems of acts that felt like they belonged together getting splintered between Post-Punk (a subgrenre of New Wave) and College Rock (a subgenre of Alternative)

Always seemed weird they adapted it into a picture book

We are now apparently ten months into watching terrible Saturday morning cartoons every week. Today's installment has so far included The Popples and this gem.

At one point, the boss bought something along these lines

Having a mid-year birthday means these things require a lot of research. I think "Old Traditions, New Standards" by Tullycraft was just before I turned 21 and "Sierra Nevada" by Bingo Trappers and Refrigerator "S/T" are right after I turned 22. Pretty sure I was 21 for this one and it's untouchable.

In more positive news, I did bake some pretty nice Cardamom Plum Crumble

This year's annual Mari Asato film is The Boy From Hell. I don't want to spoil anything, but perhaps you'll enjoy the Gobliny soundtrack for this segment in which a surgeon collects children to bring back to her castle home/medical practice for her once-decapitated/now monstrous son's birthday party

Added a bird to our Halloween Tree

Deeply disappointed this isn't actually a Don't Let the Riverbeast Get You video game

Sadly, the book goes with the made for TV language

Good memory! That's a good one, as is "Freak Shows" by Robert Bogdan.

Why do I have this on an old hard drive?

I don't know if these all count as "weird," but here's a painting my dad bought from a colleague at a boarding school, a terrifying alabaster face my grandmother owned, a sculpture of the Laurelhurst Theatre, and a great painting by @strangegodsart.bsky.social

Repost with a favorite book from your childhood

Mine is Alan Mendelsohn The Boy From Mars by @danielpinkwater.bsky.social. I first read it in third grade, and have probably read it a dozen times since, most recently out loud to my kid (whom I also tried to name after a character in the book)

This was a good impulse, but the resulting cookies are almost overpoweringly rich. On the plus side, I used up the leftover gelt from a couple years ago.

Store-bought toaster cakes are too expensive and taste mildly plasticine, so made my own this morning

8yo and I started putting together our list of possible Halloween viewing. Things with a star are things she hasn't seen yet.

Made these butter pecan cookies today. Pretty solid.
