Trump cuts pose existential threat to the next generation of scientists
The future of atmospheric science is going to be shaped by the youth who are seeing our country abdicate its role in advancing science and discovery.

These were not "layoffs" but illegal firings. Of, by the way, people doing critical jobs like, I don't know, warning people about potentially fatal flash floods.

During my very brief federal career, I learned a ton about fish passage issues facing our country and tribal neighbors. This news is SO BAD. There was no reason to reverse this agreement. So many people, fish, and creatures that need water are going to suffer needlessly. 😡🙄

More authoritarianism focused towards scientists 🙄
Science and research should be objective.

This Exec Order is a rant on science the Administration does not like. Following that it seems to promote good research practices (Sec.3, part a)- but alas…

The EO gives a political appointee the power to decide when findings need to be “corrected.”

I served in the NCCC 15 years ago and it was a profoundly transformative time for me and those who served with me. Getting sent home like this would have devastated us.
Volunteers with AmeriCorps’ National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) program were abruptly ordered to pack up and go home, with little explanation. It’s part of the latest round of cuts pushed by Elon Musk.

Super. On the day I'm back in this gd system, the goons have access to it 🙄🙄🙄
Musk staffers gained access to a system at the Interior Department. We had resisted their attempts for about two weeks to obtain administrative access to the program. Two IT officials who stood their ground are now on administrative leave and under investigation.

This is horrible to post, but I may as well post it. We are essentially shutting down research operations in my group, which is focused on treatments for pediatric brain cancer. I’m a well funded investigator, and there’s no choice. Science can’t function without the stability of NIH

But will we get our jobs back? Nobody knows! My former supervisor said they're "awaiting guidance". It's cool, it's not like it's super urgent for hundreds of thousands of people or anything 🙄🙄🙄
Not a word on bringing back probationary employees today.

I heard through DM that Forest Service made the decision to backpay probationary employees then put them on admin leave because they expect most of their positions to be eliminated by a Reduction in Force (RIF)!
