“To your first Seoul exhibit,” he said, forcing a grin. “And to finally eating something that isn’t cold tiny bites.” Namjoon huffed a quiet laugh, clinking his glass against Jungkook’s. “To surviving opening night.” They drank. At first, the talk was easy. The kind of idle drifting conversation built to keep things from sinking too deep. Jungkook teased him about the critic who called his curatorial text “achingly introspective.” Namjoon retorted that it was better than “painfully inaccessible.” They laughed, briefly, and it almost felt normal. But as the food came and went, and more soju bottles drying empty, the silences between their sentences grew longer. They talked about the museum staff, about mutual friends, about how Seoul felt different now. Neither asked what they really wanted to — if Namjoon had found what he came here for, if he still couldn’t let go. The rain outside deepened. The ahjumma reached behind her counter and turned up the small radio perched near the soup pot. “…And this one’s a listener request,” said the DJ, her voice low and familiar. “For anyone who can’t sleep tonight.” The static cleared… and the piano began. Lee Sora’s Song Request. The melody poured through the tent, soft but certain, carrying words like fragments of a confession: I write you a letter, but I can’t send it… Namjoon’s hand stilled around his glass. His throat tightened, not from the alcohol, but from the ache threading through the music. There was something painfully specific about it — the way Lee Sora’s voice wavered on the line “I listen to this song again, because it feels like you’re listening too.” He didn’t realize Jungkook was watching him until he spoke. “Hyung?” Namjoon blinked hard. He opened his mouth, attempting to say something, but the words wouldn’t pour out. The song went on — gentle, deliberate, unbearably intimate. Someone’s song plays for me… The notes seemed to press on every memory he’d tried to bury — the messages unsent, the words left suspended. The city’s noise outside faded, until it was just that voice, that ache. The air between them grew still. Jungkook didn’t move. He just watched as Namjoon’s hand came up to his face, pressing against his eyes, his shoulders trembling in silence. The sound he made wasn’t loud, but it was enough. Outside the rain fell harder, drumming softly against the plastic roof; steady, merciful, like a curtain between them and the rest of the world. When the song ended, neither spoke. The DJ’s voice returned, soft as a sigh: “That was ‘Song Request,’ for all the ones still waiting.” Jungkook poured another glass quietly, slid it across the table, and said nothing. He didn’t need to. Because in that moment — the smell of rain, the hum of the city, the lingering echo of a song neither of them could place — Jungkook understood. Namjoon wasn’t mourning what was gone. He was mourning what had never really ended.
