Heck, looking into it, it looks like it's because the word "buddy" has two etymological origins: "bruddy"/"bruthy" from "brother" vs. "butty" from a term used to refer to coal-mining workmates.

I wonder if that explains why it's gendered in the UK and not the US?
From Websters 1913 dictionary: Butty, n. (Mining): one who mines by contract, at so much per ton of coal or ore. Wikipedia.org etymology of "buddy": First appears in 1788 in the writings of Charles Dibdin, of uncertain origin. Possibly from *bruddy, *bruthy, a child-talk alteration of brother. The Standard Dictionary [that is, Funk and Wagnalls] gives butty as a variant of buddy. I raise the query whether precedence should not be the other way. When I was a boy in the Pennsylvania coalfields, one of the commonest words in the miners’ speech [again mining, as in England!] was butty, or buttie, as I have always preferred to spell it, meaning work-fellow. In the cramped, underground and honey-combs where bituminous coal is dug, the man with a pick and the man with the shovel are literally butties, working all day long buttock to buttock, or in the vulgar but comradely abbreviation, butt to butt. The word was used generally in a technical sense, without any endearing connotation of spiritual nearness. But the boys of the community thirty years ago adopted the word for the idea which later at school they were to express by chum, a word which I confess always sounds emasculated and utterly lacking the vulgar warmth of buttie (!).

Finally, an excuse to share my FAVORITE review of Dogville (2003)!

As a heads up, it's pretty mean, but calling the movie "boringly excessively rapey" and telling fans "oh, sorry, should I put a chalk outline saying CAVE down so you know where you the fuck are?" are just too good.
A Letterboxd review of Dogville (2003) by Daniel: I tend to revisit things, because I revise my opinions over time. used to hate Sonic Youth, then Hal Hartley used Kool Thing. used to hate Future, then I got drunk with the hoes to Stripper And Percocet Joint. the experiences of life change the way you interact with art. I’m the same way with movies; used to think Antonioni was a hack, now I think he’s absolutely phenomenal at portraying malaise and emptiness. so I decided to revisit Dogville. I used to think it was a mixture of the bad kinds of artsiness, wanky european americommentary that misses the mark by trying way too hard to stuff every allegorical insult possible in, was ugly shakycam dogshit, boringly excessively rapey, and full of the kind of bland provocatuerism edginess that had already been conquered and explored and mined deep to the vein by the mid-seventies.
