My freeheirloomseeds.org tomato seeds have sprouted! I always plant two seeds, in case one is a dud. We’ll see which one of these wins the growth race in a couple/few weeks and trim one sprout down. Pulled some carrots that were crowding the new sprouts, fertilized, and now everyone is happy!

Hmm. Some of my seeds aren’t sprouting. Checked my water coverage, and, sure enough, those little areas weren’t getting hit. Adjusting and trying again. Plus a new video coming. It’s time to rotate some spent lettuce for some new seeds.

It’s Spring! At least it will be on the cal next week. I’ve been experimenting with lows and highs/cools and warms. See how it’s all coming along as I catch you up, and I’ll start zooming in on lessons in the coming weeks. As always, ask questions in the thread, and let me know what you wanna grow!

Some of them may be creepier than others, like this one, but spiders are a huge friend of the garden! Grab a cup and a piece of paper to trap and move them outside to do their jobs of eating the bad bugs.
It’s National Save a Spider Day. How many spiders have you saved?

I’m sure everyone adds stretch goals to their garden calendar entries -

“Finish cleaning around the bird bath, rake leaves on side, move flagstone to front, move ladders back to side, transplant back flowers. Stretch goal — weed near bbq.”

Like everyone has garden entries in their calendars, too.

Just got my seeds from freeheirloomseeds.org — thanks, @tallgirl6234.bsky.social!! Planted tomatillo, tomato and jalapeño, just as it’s starting to warm up — and will keep the carrots and peas and onions going for a while longer. Cucumbers and beans are next — just gotta decide which beans!

Los Angeles! Fires, floods and, suddenly next week, it’s going to be Spring! 75/day, 55/night! Time to plan Spring gardens! Of course, there will be some fluctuation, so there’s still time to keep your Winter gardens going. My peas have just started to flower, so no pulling yet, but planning, yes!

@mayor.lacity.gov Let’s be like Paris!
“On the streets of Paris, thousands of trees are being planted, the city’s distinctive grey zinc rooftops are getting a makeover and workers are installing drinking fountains that release a cooling mist.

The changes are part of the French capital’s fight against heatwaves.”

Hey, Everyone — I’ve been gardening. A lot. Without the pressure of having to record videos or take pictures or explain what I’m doing. I needed to get some stuff done — the garden was not waiting for me to untangle my social media thoughts — but I definitely had some guilt. I feel like… 1/2

I’m having trouble figuring out my new social media usage, but I think I have a plan… to try. I’m so used to turning on my live and rambling about gardening, but the limitations of 1-minute, pre-recorded content is honestly bringing me down and demotivating me from doing what I love. Stay tuned!

Putting aside some time on Sunday to do some catching up — which will include some post-fire clean-up. For someone not directly IN the fire, I did have ash in my yard. So what does that mean, and what am I gonna do about it? Stay tuned…

Whew! I just went outside for a bit. It’s not smoky and doesn’t smell, so I didn’t wear a mask, but I’m suddenly extremely wheezy. So I’m taking another indoor day. From the window, I’ve noticed that my berries and stone fruit trees are starting to bud, which means it’s time to fertilize! Tomorrow!

Just got off a Master Gardener call. I’ll have fire info as it pertains to our Los Angeles gardens soon — like is the food we’re growing safe with all of the chemicals in the air? What about soil health? So many people affected and so many other things to consider. Be safe, and give what you can.

The snap pea seeds that I planted a few weeks ago are successfully sprouting, but I couldn’t resist picking up some seedlings while I was at the nursery. It’s squished in the bed with low-growing nasturtiums, and the snap peas will head up the trellis.
