Shout out for former postdoc @plant-trx.bsky.social, who just started his own lab at the Weizmann institute! Yoav is working on several awesome studies!

2/2 Our lab pioneered the use of genome graphs already 16 years ago! Read this oldie-but-goldie from @labschneeberger.bsky.social and Jörg Hagmann: Simultaneous alignment of short reads against multiple genomes

The “Art of Longevity” — is it by any chance left-handed DNA?

So a we’ll-known scientist founds a company that has RNA-seq as its core tech. Publishes a paper on a new RNA-seq data set with this conflict of interest statement. What gives?

Paris is beautiful — clean, few unhoused, limited car traffic. Is that because that’s what they are reading?

Congrats, Joe Ecker @salkinstitute.bsky.social, to receiving the McClintock Prize! Joe has been a visionary leader of the field of genetics and genomics – not only for plants – for decades

Game changer for cell-based plant genetics: the labs of Caixia Gao & Jin-Long Qiu have developed very efficient self-replicating vectors and they just published a very nice proof-of-concept paper.

Not mentioned in our 1990 letter (www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...), but I noticed the similarity between Drosophila fkh and rat HNF3A while reading the paper from the Darnell lab in G&D and looking closely at fig. 5! No computer involved…

One of the coolest moments in my scientific career.

Things really became worse in the last 6 years. An increase by 50,000% (assuming the 300M was for global deaths).

I'm making a collage of Arabidopsis habitats for a seminar. If you have photos to share, such as these iconic ones from @mexpositoalonso.bsky.social & @coevolution.bsky.social, please send to weigel@tue.mpg.de. Please let me also know how to attribute them. 🙏🙏🙏🙏

2/2 @hotvegetables.bsky.social now solved this mystery, showing that this locus is responsible for natural variation in root architecture in response to commensal Pseudomonas — likely due to local adaptation

1/2 Many years ago, @plantylisasmith.bsky.social identified an Arabidopsis hybrid incompatibility due to interaction between different alleles at the OAK receptor-like kinase (RLK) locus, but it was unknown why there is so much sequence diversity at this locus

Pro tip: if you ask ChatGPT or a similar model to draft an email for a PhD and postdoc position: You are supposed to not only insert your name and contact info, but you would want to also remove the square brackets.

Just saying…

Out after peer review, collaborative study from Nordborg & Weigel labs with help from many others. Not the largest collection of new Arabidopsis thaliana genomes, but we hopefully put forward some good ideas for how to think about pangenomes and their analysis!
