The city has selected sites for six new shelters, but some councillors are trying to block them. The City of Toronto is planning to open up 20 new shelter sites by 2033. In-person community consultations will be held next week in Scarborough and Etobicoke around two of these sites. This is a great opportunity to show your support.

Tuesday June 17, 6:30 - 8:30 PM Prince of Wales Park Tennis Court, 1 Third St. To discuss the proposed shelter at 66 Third St. Both sessions will be hosted by the City of Toronto Learn more about the proposed sites Toronto’s homelessness crisis Approximately 12,000 people depend on the City of Toronto’s shelter system. On average, 200 people are turned away from shelters each night due to insufficient capacity. Shelters act as a stepping stone to permanent housing. They provide essential support to individuals in immediate housing crisis and reduce reliance on other high-cost services such as emergency rooms. To address the gap in demand, the City is planning to open up 20 new shelter sites by 2033. Sites have already been selected for the first six shelters, with plans to have them open between 2027 and 2030. Social Planning Toronto is seeking frontline drop-in workers to join the Workers Leadership Table. The WLT is a space where workers from drop-in centres located in Toronto can connect, share experiences, and shape research and advocacy efforts. This is part of a larger project focused on advancing fairness for sector workers within the city of Toronto. Whether you’re an experienced advocate, or if you’re simply interested in sharing your observations and ideas for change, we encourage you to contact us to join the WLT. Honorarium: $30/hour. 2025 Ontario Provincial Election Fact Sheet: Housing and homeless. Ontario is in a housing crisis, and homelessness rates are soaring. More provincial funding is urgently needed to ensure everyone has a place to live. It’s not enough to simply increase housing supply.
