This is true for some schemes but doesn't explain the fall in planning applications.
The increase in building costs has caused the fall in planning. Improving viability will help this.
Removal of second stair cores would help massively but is politically hard.

I think the main thing we can learn from the Victorian building booms is that building a shit ton of housing is the only way to affordably house people.
The shit will get redeveloped and the good will survive. Poor housing is better than no housing.

I think you need to look at this from a market perspective rather than per building. These measures mainly improve viability because house building in London has cratered.
I agreed that it will provide minor if any increase in units for each building but more buildings will be viable.

Yeah exactly this is all new build stuff, which does need to cater for life in 40 years time but over specification just reduces new supply currently.
Absolutely no requirements for existing stock currently. Purely left to the market.

This isn't a complete removal of bike storage just a lowering of standards. Current rules require 1.5 spaces per bed and result in massive over provision of cycle storage. Huge empty bike storage roomS in basements of new development don't help anyone.

Absolute favourite of this was the series where one of them was a police detective and first episode said "I catch murderers for a living, this'll be easy" to literally everyone and whatdoyaknow next day she's dead.
Real strategic thinking there love.

Because they're the only people who can build homes in this madly regulated sector!
Profit is the signal we use to allocate economic activity towards productive activity, getting charities to build houses is a novel solution. Not sure it'll get us the 200,000 homes a year we need...

Exactly, development is all about trade offs.
It's just at the minute we've heavily legislated in favour of protecting things with no representation for the prospective benefit of new homes.
