I love an old map! These beautiful 1859 geological charts (4yrs prior to the Waikato Invasion) show placenames in use at the time, like Whaingaroa (renamed Raglan soon after) and Kirikiriroa (renamed Hamilton 5yrs later), and over in the EBOP Putauaki ("Mt Edgecumbe" in brackets)

A fun little rabbithole: 'ngutu' = 'lip' / 'beak', so you'd think 'parore' might be 'turned', but it's not—at least not in modern Māori (instead, it's a 🐟). But the Marquesan verb 'parore' means 'to turn'. I guess when early Māori named the bird they still spoke the language of the Marquesan islands
