They meant "daft". I'm sure they'll issue a correction.

Make it a time-traveling car, and you've got a novel!

Well... Bluesky put Tor's thread in my timeline (even though I wasn't following him, which is sort of odd), and I can see now from reading the whole thread that these are _not_ Tim Snyder quotes. Je me rétracte! Those little Snyder videos are great reminders, though. Strong recommend!

Funnily enough, Tor and I were briefly flatmates in San Francisco in the late eighties. I recall him as a very smart, very left person; the antithesis of Weev. Don't know how he got to where he is now, or even where that is, exactly.

I'm pretty sure these are just quotes from Timothy Snyder's "On Tyranny". I've been listening to one lesson a day while making lunch every day for the past week or so, just to get a refresher.

This would have happened no matter who was in the White House. But, most Americans drew the entirely wrong conclusion about what caused it. Trump is what happens when Americans draw the wrong conclusion for 40 years.

"Morning in America" back in 1983-1984 was just the anticipated, massive recovery following a prolonged, very deep recession.

Also, the LLM approach to AI has probably ceilinged out, or will do so shortly. What is the great, cost-saving thing that roughly the current level of LLM capability can do reliably, without hallucinating? This is starting to feel a lot like 1999.

PRRI and others have done some great work on sizing up the Qanon phenomenon (basically, 20% of Americans/25% of Republicans affected). How widespread is this "resist libs" phenom? This is the first I've heard of this. But, maybe it's huge, and I just don't know. Any numbers on this? Thanks.

It's not an echo chamber, though. It's a place where expertise isn't dead, and it's civil. And the jokes are funny.

We need new cultural productions that get the oxytocin pumping and inspire us to do brave things together. Nowadays, it might not be music. Video games, something totally new, ??? But, I'm certain that this will prove indispensable to our survival and success.

My guess is that it took less time for people to make the mental adjustment back then because no Fox News, etc.
October 30, 2024 at 5:04 PM
Yes, I realize that. What I meant to ask was whether popular sentiment was similar to what we're seeing now. What I seem to recall is that it took a while for people to realize that higher absolute prices were actually lower in adjusted terms. But, what's happening now may be very different. IDK.

How does this compare to the period following the second oil shock and Volker's subsequent savagery? I've been wondering about this recently. I was only 14 in 1981. But, I recall a lot of sticker shock then, too. Of course, it was morning in America by 1984. But, not so much in '81. Do you know?

So much so that the German parliament may ban the party. No such option here in the US (for better or worse).

German lawmakers from across the political spectrum are working together to ban the Alternative for Germany party, which has been classified as partly right-wing extremist. Can they succeed?

What about the role of demographic shifts and generational turnover? Attitude surveys disaggregated by age cohort seem to suggest that the electorate will look very different in 2028 and 2032. Could this, in fact, be the last hurrah? Would love to hear from some demographers about this.

Is it the FEC that would have to bring a case like this? If so, I stand corrected. (Though, I do wish Garland had prosecuted Trump a whole lot earlier.)
