UPDATE to my previous post
I have found a solution I was told you can't make the smoke visible from father away so I put a bacon and grey glass under the fire, I haven't found any other solutions but if I do I shall test them and see which one works best.

Remember folks if you want to find a fortress faster just fix a ruined nether portal because you will spawn closer to the fortress than you will if you make your own portal I've done this dozens of times & you may even spawn inside the fortress just watch your step so you don't swim in the lava.
