Six-year-itch midterms are funky. There’s usually only a little change for presidents in the House - but the Senate turns into a massive dumpster fire.
In 2006, Dems +6 included 4 states W had won twice; in ‘14 Rs +9 included 3 Obama ‘08 states.
2026?

The ultimate tribute to @pelosi.house.gov may be, more than 3 years after announcing she was leaving leadership, the same week she announced she’s retiring, the NRCC is still pumping out fundraising emails invoking her name.
She wore the GOP hatred of her as a badge of honor.

And Zolan does a great job nailing how little Trump seems to care about a government shutdown that is on verge of setting a record for length.

And on our WaPo homepage my colleagues Hannah Knowles & Emily Davies outline how Trump has done nothing to help in VA and NJ Gov races an other statewide races.

Broader media is picking up on a theme that JMart at Politico & me have been harping on for months: Trump doesn’t really do much aside from holding court (usually while sitting down) with WH press.
JMart nails it here with Trump doing nothing on CA referendum:

… Trump does lotsa press events & world leader meetings inside White House.
He’s otherwise pretty sedentary.
Since signing big bill, he’s been to Trump DC course 12 times, to Bedminster 6-plus times, to Kennedy Center twice. 7 days no public schedule.
Rs want more travel.

A really smart Sunday Nightcap column from @dcdufour.bsky.social about how Congressional Democrats have abandoned the Midwest & only pick leaders/chairs from the coasts.

And this can’t be said often enough, voters used to love Trump on economy. My gosh, a week after Capitol attack, 53% of voters still said, well he did great on economy.
Now it’s his kryptonite. Upside down at 40-60, unchanged from the spring.
This is treacherous territory for Rs.
July 16, 2025 at 12:33 PM
It doesn’t feel this way right now, given how much he dominates the scene and how Rs cower in total fear.
But Trump’s base - those who most strongly approve of his performance - has never been smaller in his time as president, per CNN poll.
Just 21% now, down from 34% in Jan 2020.

Some of the best writers every week come from our Letters to the Editor. Here’s a collection of lovely thoughts about dogs, particularly Fury, who knows how to steer his mommy out of troubled waters.
We don’t deserve them. Dogs are better than us.

At a time when my news org & many others are targeting copy editors, a salute to those awesome colleagues who catch our mistakes and oftentimes write insanely great headlines like this one:
A Streetcar named retire …

It’s really hard to explain how tiny $820,000 in Q1 revenue is. Boutique K Street shops with a handful or fewer partners make more.
Trump must not read Truth Social himself.
Or else oligarchs-crypto/techbros-pardon seekers would be dumping $5m-$10m into Truth ads.
What a failure.

Just a brutal read for congressional Rs from …. Brendan Buck, one of Paul Ryan’s top aides, a Ways & Means vet, BoehnerLand and Romneyville.
It’s the “smallness” of agenda that will cut deepest in HC5 & Mansfield.

So much for FRIENDS, PARTNERS, ALLIES, NEIGHBORS.
The Canadian embassy columns are no longer boasting about their friend, the U.S.

From the Jan 30 peak (44,882, 10 days into Trump 2.0), the Dow is now down more than 4,000 points.

Four years on, rest in peace, Billy.

Flowers at the plaque at the security stop he stood guard. That was a very bad Friday for USCP & all Capitol community.

Voters cannot stand how Trump is handling economy/tariffs, Exhibit 367.

This AP poll is pretty brutal. The economy used to always be DJT’s strong suit. Even post 1/6.

Now it’s his kryptonite.

Never leave the office until you’ve block-deleted all the email you’ve no intention of ever reading.

Well, if you cancel a certain web sales service platform, they’ll refund you. And then they’ll send you notes trying to ge you to rejoin.
They offer 50% off to those on Medicaid.

As many Dems on Hill fixate on price of eggs, @gallego.senate.gov took a very different, more serious path in 1st Senate speech today: saving the free world.

“America does not stand with dictators, and we never will and we shall never.”
