Yeah, it was borderline playable. I first played Half Life 2 on one of those GeForce 4 MX cards that were really a GeForce 2, and it wasn't great.

To be fair, it was possible run Half Life 2 (and Doom 3) with gimped graphics, no pixel shader effects, on DirectX 6-level hardware. But RT-capable GPUs have been around for nearly 7 years now, whereas DX8/9 was a lot newer in 2004, and games with support for older GPUs quickly vanished after that

At an old job, the admins disabled the printscreen key on everyone's machine. You could still get around it by using the onscreen keyboard.
