Now that's one comfortable Cuckoo Bee. Looks nice and secure holding on to that Narrowleaf Milkweed flower. #nature, #naturephotography, #PNW

While one sleeps, another is the busy bee out foraging. Honey Bee (Apis mellifera) and Cuckoo Bee (Xeromelecta californica) sleeping in Narrowleaf Milkweed (Asclepias fascicularis). This was during a thunderstorm in the Klamath Siskiyou Mtns. of Oregon. #nature, #wildlife, #PNW

Some friends in the neighborhood. Butterflies left to right - California Tortoiseshell (Nymphalis californica), Lilac-bordered Copper (Tharsalea nivalis) and Echo Azure (Celastrina echo) near the Siskiyou Crest (Oregon). Yellow-faced Bumblebee, check out that pollen basket. #wildlife, #nature, #PNW

During a recent trip to Lake of the Woods (Oregon) I was able to catch a glimpse of this beautiful Western Tanager (Piranga ludoviciana) sitting on a Serviceberry (Amelanchier alnifolia) branch. He didn’t stay long but seemed to be enjoying the coolness of the lake. #birds, #birdwatching, #nature

It's been a while since I posted, so here is my treat for the day. I've only seen the Phantom Orchid (Cephalanthera austiniae) in this ivory stage once in the past. When it ages and turns brown was the typical sighting for me. #nativeplants, #NaturePhotography, #nature, #PNW

Two of my favorites, Valley Gartersnake and California Kingsnake. The photo of the kingsnake was taken at night. I was out for a hike looking for owls at the edge of a woodland/annual grassland and almost stepped on him. #nature #NaturePhotography #herps #snakes

My last photo of the day gives a little love to lizards. Another photo from the Sierra Nevada foothills. I was investigating an old miners cabin when I came across this southern alligator lizard out for a walk. I’ve seen many over the years but not one so green. #WorldWildlifeDay #NaturePhotography

Thinking of wildlife today. I took this in the Sierra Nevada foothills (California) on a day when the temperature was 112 degrees F., 3% relative humidity, on the edge of Blue Oak/Gray Pine woodland. This bobcat was looking up at a passing turkey vulture. #Nature #WorldWildlifeDay #NaturePhotography

California red-legged frog in California bay tree. I took this photo a couple of years ago in the Santa Cruz Mountains of California. Just walking by, looked down and there she was. Went back and found many more moving from breeding pond to forest cover. #NaturePhotography #herps #conservation

The Lick Refractor telescope, 57 feet long, 4 feet wide, weight 25,000 pounds built in the late 1800s. My granddaughter took this photo. Science is strong with this one.

Visited Lick Observatory on Mt. Hamilton, CA yesterday. Introduced my granddaughter to the Lick Refractor telescope. Beautiful sky above the large dome of the observatory building. #astronomy #photography #family

With Valentine’s Day coming up tomorrow I thought I would post a little Newt love. I took this photo a few years ago while I was conducting surveys for California Newts in Coyote Creek, Santa Clara County, California. #nature #herps, #wildlifephotography #NaturePhotography

Going back to the fall of 2024 for a beautiful sunset over Lake Abert in eastern Oregon. Wonderful example of the basin and range landscape with lots of geology and wildlife to see. #Oregon #conservation #nature #water #NaturePhotography

After several days of snow the sun was out in Ashland OR yesterday. The amount of snow has made travel in southern Oregon very messy at times. #Oregon #PNW #Photography #NaturePhotography

A highlight for me today was seeing this sharp-shinned hawk in an ornamental pear. This hawk was being dive-bombed by lesser goldfinches, dark-eyed juncos and a couple of white-breasted nuthatch. The entire time not caring one little bit. #birds #BackyardWildlife #birdwatching #Oregon

Visiting Oak Titmouse in their northern most range, Ashland Oregon. They have taken to two artificial nesting boxes, currently being used as a cache for seeds. They are also enjoying the many spiders clinging to the top of the fence below their boxes. #birding #birdwatching #nativebirds

Beautiful winter day for a walk on the Bear Creek Greenway in Ashland, Oregon. Riparian vegetation recovering after the Almeda Fire in 2020. Snags provide opportunities for cavity nesting and observation perches. Many acorn woodpeckers observed today. #birds
