Finally, in an energy system dominated by polluting sources, the only way to achieve this NDC is solar and EVs.

Furthermore, energy access is still low and a core priority.

Especially significant because energy demand is rising rapidly.

During peak demand in ERCOT, 3-4 GW of coal was unexpectedly offline. Not a problem at all because renewables met 50% of demand.
Attacking renewables in favor of ‘dispatchable’ power to help the grid… 🤦🏻‍♂️

Heatwave hits.
Huge demand, higher than forecast.
Unexpected outages at ‘fully dispatchable’ traditional power plants.
Solar and batteries keep the grid stable and reduce costs at the same time.

Shared my thoughts with @thehindu.com's businessline on how Trump’s irresponsible energy policies are hurting clean energy companies, costing jobs, and slowing decarbonization. 🔌⚡ “Policy shocks to boost fossil fuels and harm the clean energy sector are taking a toll on US clean energy companies..."

Renewables and storage helping keep Texas’ grid stable during a major heatwave while the Republican state legislature restricts them.
State or federal, attacks on clean energy hurt grid reliability and drive up prices. 🔌💡

Finally making my way through this book. It’s excellent! 🔌💡
Macro takeaways so far:
Steel- hard but doable, off-takers urgently needed
Chemicals- most difficult scientifically
Clean hydrogen- we need a huge amount ASAP, even just to replace current hydrogen use

Incredible growth.
Mississippi and Louisiana: from very little solar as late as 2021 to 1.5 GW in 2024.
Indiana and Arkansas added 1.5+ GW in the last year.

Wind is getting so much better and it's no just new wind farms. 🔌💡
Huge upgrades to existing wind farms: more electricity generation, fewer materials, lower costs

It’s a hard time in the climate and clean energy sector.
-To job seekers like myself, keep at it.
-To organizations, we appreciate your work and determination.
-To people hiring, clear communication and transparency like this email I got are very important and deeply appreciated.

Furthermore, this seasonal pricing means that utilities sell more power at the time of the year when they sell less power. This means:
-they have spare generation that they are not making money from
-the system has spare capacity and can absorb more power demand
This is true all over the country!

Why should utilities offer large discounts on power during winter months? Because they sell A LOT more electricity 🔌⚡
March 12, 2025 at 9:57 PM
Minnesota ratepayers have a large discount on power usage during the winter half of the year and save a significant amount of money with heat pumps (unlike other states with disfavorable price ratios that don't have the same time of use pricing)

Valuable carbon products as a second revenue source:
-One company generates black carbon and sells it to Goodyear as a tire input.
-Another makes graphene, which can be used in semiconductors, electronics, and batteries, and can sell for hundreds of dollars per kilogram.

-uses simpler machinery

3/ WoodMac shows the same trend globally, albeit with only a 2 GW drop in new solar (495 GW in 2024 > 493 in 2025) 🔌💡☀️ Interestingly, that if both WoodMac and EIA are right, growth would otherwise increase globally and be negative only bc of the US.

There's a huge contrast between long/short term solar projections. Slowing growth next year and rapid growth in the next decade. 🔌💡☀️ By 2036, this model projects solar meeting 50% of global energy demand! (projects 10%/yr cost decline and 25%/yr deployment growth)
