A terrible tightrope, trapped hundreds of feet in the air, balancing above glinting teeth, a crowd eager to swallow me whole. I had loved him. Before the games, before the war, before Peeta. But as I had looked at him in my big house, empty of sound and life, I had realized something with miserable clarity. I had loved him, once. Not any more. It had been the same for him as all of us, swept up in the war; desperate to survive, to belong to the bigger picture, to make the Capitol pay for all they had done to us — I didn’t hate him for that. I never could, not with all that I had done. I told him as much, my heart no longer struggling to remain calm; slow and measured, as if we were alone in the forest again, whispering in the mist. “I don’t hate you.” I had said. His face had crumpled, anticipating what I was going to say next before I even opened my mouth. He’d always known me best. “I just don’t forgive you.”
