Pretty clever idea! I actually have thought of something similar with a hammer themed woodpecker, but I think this builds upon the theme very nicely.

To be fair, the Terraria player and NPC sprites originally were actually blatant edits of the Final Fantasy sprites, but for obvious reasons this was changed to be a bit more distinct.

Gen 1 wasn't a very inspired region, although it's to be expected if it wasn't planned to be such a dominating franchise.
Regardless, I definitely like and prefer your redesign, and I'm a bit impressed by how well you nailed the style.
