Now I can't call this a favorite of all-time, but it's been on constant rotation lately. Laufey deserves all of the success she's earned; her blend of classical, jazz, and pop is unassuming and honest. And no, she did not "kill jazz." Grow up.

Specifically the latter recording; a reflection on a long life and all the turbulence that comes with it. Gould takes a contemplative, near-spiritual approach to one of the greatest compositions to come out of the medium, and possibly Bach's magnum opus.

Shaped my conception of sound in high school. Cannonball is the perfect mix of elite-tier swing, buttery tone, the best jazz vibrato you'll hear, and expression. Definitely one of my desert Island albums.

Toss up between Apostrophe, Jazz from Hell, and this. A mock rock opera with Zappa's classic goofiness, sometimes offensive (sonically and lyrically), with high musical prowess. "Watermelon in Easter Hay" might be my favorite guitar solo of all time.

Really tough to recommend without context. Randy is one of America's greatest living song writers and a bona fide American treasure. Nobody writes biting, funny satire like him. Nobody.

How do you choose just one?? SOAD's output is comparatively small, but I genuinely believe each of their albums are no-skips. High energy, unique, politically-motivated. Incredible.

Like many, my first exposure to the band/John Darnielle. And what an exposure; the album is raw, heartfelt and gutting. Songs about the human virtues of loving your neighbor, failed relationships, and death metal bands. All-timer.
