REVOLUTIONARY LETTER #98 THINGS TOO RIDICULOUS TO PUT UP WITH Medicare with a deductible—for starters. Are they so ambivalent that they have to give it with one hand take it back with the other? That's nuts! Copayments, too. Copayments on Medicare are like taking out sales tax whenever you give a buck to a homeless person. What do you think-eight and a half percent? Ten percent? What makes sense to you? Should we debate about it? Filibuster? Income tax on social security-same thing. Didn't I pay tax on that once when I gave it to them to put in a fund out of which they were supposed to give me social security? They're not doing me a favor, it's mine— did they think I'd forget? Taking part of the social security on which I'm paying income tax, and keeping it for monthly premiums to Medicare-why do I feel like I'm going around in a circle? Dear Avuncular Samuel, just how many times do you think I'll give you a piece of the same dwindling pile of dough? Do you think I don't know where it came from? Here's an idea: why not take back the right to print paper money from the Fed? Stop paying the Federal Reserve for yr own money. Send those old geezers from the Fed away stick em in a retirement home with black & white TV grade B movies, and no remote, Just some toothpicks, and a rocking chair— oh, and a very, VERY small SS check each month that they never see—it goes straight to the bank. Then let's see if they have something new to say Something that makes more sense This is just the beginning folks, stay tuned. We'll be back again next week, same time same station. And in the meantime don't forget the Prayer: it's the only prayer that works & I learned it back in the '60s, from one of my kids. The dear poet/mentor Sina Queyras first read the title as proper-sit-ions. So, it depends on your position: it could be the 'proper' position of privilege; or a marginal standing. Where are you & what relationship do you have with here?

You may think of them as dislocated prepositions. If you grow up in a language & move into another, then your pointers don’t fully match—you have a different relationship with space, which erupts in prepositional errors.

WATSONS We set two death traps & we set a live one To give Watson a chance as our child pleaded, having composited & baptized the ideal mouse out of real scatterings. The live trap is a seesaw box: if you reach for the peanut-butter droplet on the far side, the weight shifts till the entrance shuts, so you’re trapped—lest a hand unlocks you bright to a cat minefield outdoors. The live trap is heavy & leaky when we return from Xmas. The downstairs renovation created an opportunity for porousness. Landlord, though, wonders how strange only our unit has gappy borders… In the air, the rotting implication our lax customs are somehow responsible for the penetrator. The morning after shivers when I remember an article on PB’s acceptable percentages of foreign matter right as my love proffers me smooth lavished on heirloom apple slices. My mouth cannot pronounce “heirloom” comfortably enough to forget its ligaments. I snack attending a government e-session on the small-print immigration changes. Landlord texts, How many trapped? Our child keeps asking, Where’s Watson? Somewhere a mouth shows cat teeth. If we leave the province, we can’t return. The e-session is recorded for our convenience. I’m waiting for the hand release.

[First page of the poetry roundup for the fall 2024 edition of mRb] The Sacred Heart Motel Grace Kwan Metonymy Press $18.95, paper, 104pp 9781998898169 The image-work alone would justify getting your copy of The Sacred Heart Motel, Grace Kwan’s debut full-length poetry collection. I say “image-work,” but multiple senses show up on almost every page, as in the opening of “GLUE TRAP”: "My heart looks like the old yellow house where thin, mouse-bitten walls separated our part of the basement from another Chinese family. We could hear their daughter practice tongue twisters, they could hear my mother scream when I went too far […]" These line breaks are masterful, splitting the thin walls and twisted tongues immigrants know so well. Indeed, the book’s dedication is “For migrants & visitors.” Yet, these are not just visitors to a country, but also to one’s heart. The table of contents, dubbed “directory,” maps seven different sections as if they were chambers – a term applicable to hearts and motels. One of the sheer brilliances of Kwan’s book is turning migration into a love poem and love into a migration. Don’t even try to separate the political from the personal; there are too many transient rooms in the heart, unregistered hearts in any given room. And, of course, there’s the border – of desire, home, identity – where all the action happens: “the convergence of lives, motivations / riding shotgun,” as Kwan puts it, or rather wrenches it from our very hearts. The timing is meaningful, marking ten years since the disappearance of the Abitibiwinnik woman Sindy Ruperthouse – which triggered public outrage, a wave of allegations of police neglect, and, eventually, the creation of a Public Inquiry Commission. Pésémapéo Bordeleau dedicates the book to Sindy’s family, whose crushing grief fills the verses: "Long is the winter The wait for spring With its sun burning The carpet of snow Shrouding the hope Johnny and Émily hold onto" This is a book of silences: the long blanket of winter, the blank of the page always larger than the poems themselves, the passivity of government, the unease of what to say before tremendous loss… The poet steps in to show what can/should/must be said – or asked – putting questions to Sindy and the witnesses of her fate, and letting the silent answers ring: "Sindy you keep your distance still But we long for your presence The ceremonies await you" Absence becomes a poetic form, charging words with the power of a ritual – the missing ceremony for a missing person. The minimalism of the work points to the unbearable scale of the ongoing tragedy of missing Indigenous women. This too is a function of poetry: a gathering of voices marching against silence. Appropriate Drowning Outfit (a poem by Kyla Houbolt) I'm not sure how to turn this life into a resume. I don't write that kind of poetry. I do notice that the cloud has a bone missing and I can relate to that. I'll be honest and say I have learned only one word of heron language and it may be that I made it up. It's easy for me to do that and I hear people lie a lot in resumes but I can't, not without vomiting the truth later on. Which defeats the whole purpose. Meanwhile is a word I use too often. It's because so much else is also happening all the time, and I keep noticing it. For example, the way I continue to, impossibly, live. Paying close attention to the wrong things. The boneless cloud. The inscrutable heron. The abuse of sound.
