Neuroscientist working in a bank. I dabble in music, videogames, literature, brains, furry stuff 🦦 and brains. I have interests in most of the natural sciences, some of the unnatural sciences. I have strong opinions on communication and Q-tips
Your memory isn't stored in any one place. It's a distributed network of associations. The info from your senses is stored where they are processed. Hippocampus works as a sort of library computer that connects all the different pieces of info into one memory. It is also associated with imagination!

You know the whole smooth/wrinkle brain thing? Usually such things is nonsense, but this one kind of has a point. The neurons in cortex mostly lie along the outer edge, forming a layer. Often referred to as "Grey Matter. The reason why human brains are folded? More surface area = more neurons!

Brain fact: The concept of "Left brained versus Right brained" is almost entirely a myth. Information is parallell processed in both halves. Some functions are still lateralized (to one side) One of these is Language. Your left brain is heavily dominant in both producing and understanding language.

Brain fact:

People who suffer from Hemispheric neglect are unable to attend to anything to their left. Lesions near temporoparietal junction makes them unable to focus on anything to their left. What more, they can no longer imagine it either, until they turn their head so it is to their right.

Psychologists-are-jerks fact:

The fear of long words is called Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia

Brain fact:

You only see about 70% of what you see at any given time. Your vision is made out of slats of information that is processed in the occipital lobe. Everything else your brain just kind of.. Fills in on its own with what it expects to be there. Explains a lot in regards to superstition.

Not-exactly-brain fact.

The medical term for "Brain freeze" is Sphenopalatine Ganglioneuralgia.

Brain fact

Caffeine acts as an antagonist on something called adenosine. Adenosine accumulates through normal brain activity, is a sleep-onset marker in the brain and reduces dopamine activity. Caffeine prevents the adenosine from attaching to receptors, making you feel more awake and refreshed.

Brain fact:

Music affects the limbic system, specifically basal ganglia. An area that is associated with Dopamine. Dopamine is both part of the reward loop, and is used by premotor cortex for movement.

This is probably why music/dancing feels good, and why people are quicker to move with music.

Bank fact of the day:

DO NOT LISTEN TO PEOPLE WHO CALL YOU AND WANT YOU TO INVEST IN CRYPTO/PEOPLE WHO SAY THEY HAVE "RECOVERED" PREVIOUS INVESTMENTS.

IT MAKES NO SENSE THAT YOU HAVE TO PAY THEM TO WITHDRAW YOUR MONEY.

The bank considers this an attempted investment, and will not cover your loss

Brain fact:

Writing brain facts using only 300 characters is tricky. It requires a lot of shortening and rephrasing.

When I do this my left Broca's area is highly active, as it is highly associated with the production of speech and proper syntax.

Brain fact:

When memory condolidate (is saved) during wakefulness, connections between neurons increase.
But more importantly while you sleep, during deep NON-REM, tiny cells break down the connections. This reduces unnecessary connections or "Noise", so only the strongest connections remain.

Brain fact:

Brain fact:

You have something called a phonological loop. It's a replay-loop of a few seconds where what you hear is re-processed by your auditory cortex.

Someone ever said something to you, and just as you ask them to repeat it you realise you know what they said after all?

Phonological loop.

Brain fact:

Your memory is divided into different categories. Episodic, semantic, procedural, etc. These have distinct pathways or structures.

This means that in some forms of dementia, you can forget what a zebra is, but remember what you ate for dinner 2 weeks ago (Unless it was Zebra).

I love the idea of a passerby seeing a bunch of people sprawled on the floor and immediately going "Oh my god the humanity!!" Before considering any other possibility... Like yoga.

Also a bit sad society-wise. You often see what you expect to see.

General Bank tips:

Don't give away your BankID to anyone, avoid putting in sensitive information after following a link if possible.

The police or bank will never ask you to transfer all your money, or verify yourself using BankID.

In doubt? Hang up and call back using verified, secure numbers.

Another brain fact:

The term "You hear what you want to hear" is actually pretty accurate.

There are as many downward connections to the ear as upwards. Your expectations fine-tune your sensitivity to auditory stimuli. This can be seen in the McGurk effect!

Hello world!

Brain fact:

Did you guys know that your brain does active time-manipulation all the time? Whenever you move your eyes, it'll "blank out" the vertigo-inducing movement, (saccade). Then when it has stopped moving it will extend what you're now looking on back to cover the blank.
