Was there a dramatic speech or epic one liner or maybe another character just died, then you want to really make that moment be very epic, then I would probably declare it as the finishing blow for anything that even got to severe let alone way over it.

Unfortunately I think you have to play those moments by ear on just how big the moment deserves to be. The context leading up to the damage roll is more important to me than the roll Itself.

There are so many cool things you can use magic cards for. I’m currently working on a 1 page ttrpg or and add on to most popular ttrpgs that use magic cards for the story beats and abilities.

If you want less intense drama but still have the player feel it you can have them lose an ability that they only recover close to the final fight or in the final fight.

Try Daggerheart and just print extra copies of the cards. I’ve never had an easier time onboarding players. Including character creation.
