I've always found this glyph of a pelican (I think) very amusing in Westendorf's Koptisches Handwörterbuch (2ed, 1977, p. 370). I assume it had to be designed specially by the printer hence its peculiar appearance. It looks like it is meant to represent hieroglyph G207, shown here from the TLA

The dialect map for an overview
It's definitely not from Coptic. Behnstedt & Woidich say it is elliptical for bētingān ʾūṭa which they say is probably from Turkish kaváta 'green, bitter tomato'. Apparently, occurs also in Saudi Arabia/Yemen as gūṭa as a later borrowing. (Wortatlas der arabischen Dialekte, Band I, 2011, p. 464f.)
