It's not just Stonewall, it's all over NPS.gov - They're erasing Trans people from history.

Those photos of Nazis burning books in 1933? Those were books on gender and sexuality.

This is a 21st century book burning in the public square. It's Memoricide - a speedbump on the road to Genocide.

I recently got asked what qualifications I needed to get a music producer role. I have a BSc, A Levels and a BTEC. But honestly I don't tend to flaunt these things. No one cares. It only matters what experience you have. That's literally it. The rest is expensive window dressing

I think I'm going to be posting my personal stuff here from now on. Feels safer than anything meta related.

A number of left-leaning groups/pages I'm in have started instilling panic, suggesting things like "NATO is planning to invade the US". Use media literacy, trust your suspicions, ask for evidence (links, screenshots).

Mastering for different platforms: do you master for Spotify et al, adhering to strict LUFS guidelines? Or is it one and done and if the streaming platform turn it down so be it?

Great production isn’t about throwing plugins at a track—it’s about decisions. Mic choice, placement, and arrangement lay the foundation. Everything else is just fine-tuning. Focus on the core before chasing the details.

Hot take: If you’re booking studio time but haven’t rehearsed your parts properly, you’re wasting your budget. The studio should be for capturing magic, not fixing basics. Prep first, then record—it’ll save time and sound way better.

4 years ago, working with ska band Chinchilla Death Cult, I released Retsina. A balkan and Latin infused, wine soaked ska anthem. The chorus is an absolute BANGER.

I played bass on this, and mixed and mastered it whilst under quarantine.

Still a great track.

Some things work independent of genre. Pairing a clean sub with a slightly distorted mid-bass adds punch without turning everything muddy.

Anyone else rocking both?

My first tip of 2025: Most ‘muddy mixes’ stem from ignoring the volume fader. If your track doesn’t sound right when levels are balanced, no fancy plug-in will fix it. Start simple—get the balance right first, then worry about adding the bells and whistles.

First year at Vibrations Studios has been remarkable. We tackled hiphop, trap, drill, two major psychedelic trance albums, a Covid-themed EP with The Boothtown Rats, and voiceovers for Birdseye. We also introduced Aftercare for artists. Looking forward to 2025! #musicproduction #yearinreview

When you’re producing, don’t rush to stack plugins. Focus on the arrangement first. If your track doesn’t work in its simplest form, no amount of processing will save it. Get the structure right, then refine.

Everytime I catch myself overthinking a mix I remind myself that The Carpenters and Led Zeppelin both recorded solos straight into the desk without an amp. Music production is less about making everything perfect and more about making an absolute BOP

The best mixes don’t start with plugins—they start with balance.

Get your faders right, let the track breathe, and THEN add effects (WITH PROPER GAINSTAGING!)

Overproducing kills vibe faster than a flat kick drum

Music production is a mix of planning and happy accidents. I’ll start with a solid plan, but it’s unplanned moments that bring it all to life.

Working w a client on an ABBA reggae album and it's working best when we go to extremes on the dub delays. Unpredictable things happen when you experiment.

Hot take: top down quiet mixing works! On drums, start with the over heads and leave them on while you add and process your spot mics. And keep it as quiet as you can until you're mixing the low end. Follow these steps and you'll have cleaner sounding mixes that work well at any volume.

Always buy the weird instrument. Doesn't matter how good you are at your chosen instrument, a new one will always give you some kind of new inspiration you'd never have accessed before. So buy the new toy. Think of it as an investment to guarantee at least 5 new songs.

#tbt (do people still do that?) to when I formed an international ska band and produced 16 singles with music videos.

Here's one of our Christmas singles.

Never intended to make the video body horror but here we are.
