Beach purgatory featuring gay pirates!

It wasn’t much, but it was enough to keep him going and put renewed energy in his step. And now he had something to bring Tom some water in so he could drink before they got moving. The beach curved on ahead of him in a blazing path of white. The light reflected off of a thousand tiny fragments of shell, each worn soft and smooth by a thousand years of being pounded against the land by the sea. It had made such a wonderful bed last night, but as the sun climbed towards its peak, the hot sand under his feet was offering him nothing but a white hot hell rolling out endlessly before him. The air shimmered hot above the beach and it took a long time, almost until he was on top of it, for Ramsey to see that there was an estuary ahead of him, and the sand beneath his feet was no longer the soft, powdery sand he was used to but firmer, damp and darker. Letting out a sound of relief, he started to jog towards it, each step feeling like he was wading through lead to get there. But at last he collapsed by the side of the stream, just a little trickle here. Washing his hands in it first to get rid of the remaining salt, he cupped his palm and brought it to his lips. Fresh! Staggering up again, he headed closer to the tree line, where the stream was narrower, but the water flowed more freely. Taking another long gulp, he filled the coconut and then drained it again, and again, splashing it over his face. He’d never been so glad to taste fresh water, or feel it on his skin. Drinking another coconut full of water again, he filled it more carefully this time and checked his compass, heading back down the direction that he had come so that he could get back to Tom.
