I remember reading LOTR and thinking Gandalf going "oh no, Sauron is INCAPABLE of even THINKING about the idea that we would ever try to destroy the ring," was a bit farfetched in just how narrow-minded Sauron was, and yet, here we are, and we've got a whole social class of people who think that way

Yup yup yup. As a baby ex-vangelical, that was one of my wake-up moments. A lot of the people I grew up with just used "Christian" to refer to anything and anyone who read the Bible (besides the Catholics). No discussion of denominations or any differences between congregations.

Yup. Although I often wonder how much of these replies are because people read the first half sentence of a post, and immediately decide to pick a fight based on that alone.

This same type of person convinced democrats to stop calling the GOP weird, regardless of how obviously effective it was, and how it clearly infuriated them. Absolutely not worth listening to.
