14. What You Are Looking For is in the Library

“What You Are Looking For is in the Library” tells the stories of patrons of a Tokyo neighborhood’s library and how a good book (and a practically magical librarian) can change your entire life. The book also highlights the fact that a library is meant to be the heart of a community, and was a timely read a few days after pulling up to my local library and seeing the library’s new security guard walking around looking like an I.C.E agent, and wondering if our library is safe for the community it serves.

12. Days at the Morisaki Bookshop
13. More Days at the Morisaki Bookshop

Although I read these two books 10 days apart, I think it’s most appropriate to review them as a pair. While listening to these books, I kept trying to find a word that properly represents the mood of this story, and the best I could come up with is “earnest”. Although this story includes the two Big Moments of tragedy, it focuses much more on the smaller parts of grief that are often harder to get through than the event itself.

11. the kamogawa food detectives

My little tour of Asian mysteries has led me to the Kamogawa Detective Agency, a nearly magical place where a father-daughter team works together to perfectly recreate dishes from your past. Not exactly the type of mystery I intended to read, but this book was so good. Quant, nostalgic, and warm, this book left me a tiny bit sad and feeling a bit reflective.

10. pseudoscience: a very short intro

I enjoyed this introduction; however, the author had more faith in my vocabulary than I could live up to. Despite my horrific lack of science-based vocabulary, I enjoyed learning the history of pseudosciences, as well as the multitude of ways we determine the validity of sciences. And frankly, I think this book should be sent to every home in the US to remind some of us that science, by its very nature, is constantly changing. Perhaps, further education on the scientific method from people who actually know what they’re talking about will lead to better things. Gotta be better than a lawyer ruining both the American healthcare system and his family’s political reputation.

yesterday, zane and i visited trinity lutheran as the first stop on our tour of local place of worship. everyone was incredibly nice & i think our church should have a dog present during worship now 🤔
today, we joined the mlk day march, afterwhich we were treated to speeches & music

review: Daisy has alot on her plate as a single mom of two, and business owner but luckily for her she's use to balancing several plates as the owner of a tea room. So when her aunt's husband is found murdered outside her tea room, and her youngest daughter confides a desire to find her birth parents, she knows she can handle it all.

I picked this book up because it was the Cozy Mystery bookclub's January pick. Unfortunately, there were many things about this book I didn't like. The writing felt clunky, and the audiobook narrator gave most characters the same voice. But the one positive I will give the book is the way it handled Jazzy's searched for her birth parents & the support Daisy offered her daughter.

title: the unexpected inheritance of inspector chopra author: vaseem kahn format: audio date: jan 13 review: As Inspector Chopra walks into his police station for the last time before his retirement, he’s besieged by a grieving mother. Later, when he arrives home, he finds he’s been gifted a baby elephant by his uncle. What do these two things have in common? Nothing, but they do set Chopra down a road towards his new future. After spending some time in Singapore with Aunty Lee, I moved on to India to hang out with Inspector Chopra as he navigates his post-retirement life. Although the mystery of this book was genuinely interesting, I felt like the book got bogged down. At several points, I felt the book should have ended already. I also don’t really care for the whole “I hate my mother-in-law” trope, although otherwise I liked Inspector Chopra.

title: meddling and murder author: ovidia yu format: audio date: jan 12 review: An old acquaintance of Aunty Lee’s borrows Nina’s services after her own maid goes missing, but when Aunty Lee has trouble getting in touch with Nina, she starts taking a closer look at the acquaintance, her brother-in-law, and their story about their maid simply leaving. You have no idea how heartbroken I was when I realized this was the last book of the series. Not only does it feel a bit unfinished, but I also enjoyed Aunty Lee’s shenanigans so much that I had hoped there were at least a few more in the series. Alas, all good things must come to an end, and Aunty Lee’s involvement in murder investigations must end at some point. And after the traumatic events of this book, I can see why Aunty Lee and Nina might stick to less deadly meddling.

title: aunty lee's chilled revenge author: ovidia yu format: audio date: jan 11 review: Aunty Lee’s business partner, Cherril, along with two of her friends, is the target of a lawsuit alleging they’re to blame for the woman’s marriage failing. Allison, the woman suing them all, is discovered dead just as her sister walks into Aunty Lee’s restaurant. Suddenly, Cherril and her friends go from being targets of a lawsuit to being suspects in a murder investigation. Aunty Lee, hindered by a sprained ankle and the resulting boredom borne of being idle, dives headfirst into the investigation. I’m not going to lie, this book didn’t end the way I had hoped, but maybe this was more interesting than my own theory. No matter how it ended, the journey there with Aunty Lee was a fun one. In this book in particular, I loved getting more insight into Auny Lee’s life with her now deceased husband and the relationship they had together. Under the lighthearted murder investigations, Aunty Lee highlights that despite great cultural differences, so many things about human nature remain the same across the globe. One of those things is that your self-appointed aunty will be in your business for better or worse. She will also feed you.

review: When two people die at an event catered by Aunty Lee’s restaurant, suspicion is focused on Aunty Lee herself, but her efforts to find answers aren’t motivated entirely by self-interest. Aunty Lee has so many questions: Who is the handsome man who disrupted the party, and why does he look so familiar? What does Mabel’s prayer group have to do with any of this? Who is the woman Mabel was talking to just before she died? Time is against Aunty Lee; the longer her business is closed in connection with these deaths, the more she risks being unable to recover her reputation regardless of her culpability.

Aunty Lee’s second investigation was just as enjoyable as the first, and I love the bit of culture and food we get sprinkled into the story. I also think Nina deserves a month-long break from everyone Aunty Lee could possibly know, especially Aunty Lee herself.

review: Aunty Lee considers anyone she feeds family & their wellbeing is her business. So, when one acquaintance of her stepson’s turns up dead, and a young American woman shows up asking questions about another of his acquaintances, Aunty Lee makes it her business to get to the bottom of this mystery.
I loved this introduction to Aunty Lee, the many people she loves, and Singaporean culture. The main group of characters is (mostly) lovable and funny, and the ending of Aunty Lee’s Delights was incredibly satisfying as a reader. I didn’t know what to expect from this series, but I found Yu’s writing to be lighthearted and witty, and it dropped little nuggets of wisdom along the way.

review: Another body turns up at Maddy’s bakery, and she once again finds herself at the top of the suspect list. In her search to find whoever murdered her ex-friend, she may just uncover the secrets her great aunt had been trying to uncover before her death.
I’m a little unsure if I liked this book or not. The main character's wishy washy attitude is a bit annoying, & i don't really care about characters who are that into fashion / being seen as upper class. But then again, I think it gives plenty of room for her to grow. I just hope she grows soon.

review: I’ve spent years hearing about this book, the musical, and the tv show, but had never really been interested until it became January’s book club pick. Although I had a vague idea of the book’s plot, it managed to surprise me. In some ways, it wasn’t as sad a story as I expected. In others, it was much sadder. I also didn’t anticipate the ways in which this book would cause me to think about grief. About how weird grief is, how it isn’t a linear process with a clear ending point, and often the starting point is before the person even dies. About how you don’t just grieve the loss of the person, but the loss of the endless possibilities of who they could have been, and who you could have been without that loss.

review: Started the year off with Halloween mysteries. Yay. Jules’s Halloween preparations take a turn when a note found in an old mahjong set seems prophetic after she finds a dead dragon on the front porch of her restaurant.

Stepping back into Ellie Alexander’s version of Ashland and spending more time with the Torte gang & Jules’s family was so enjoyable. I loved spending time with Carlos and Ramiro, getting to know them better. All of that, on top of a fun mystery, means I will continue to catch up with the goings-on of Ashland & the Torte crew.

today we attended an anti ice protest, at the end of which a man brought us juice and snack bars then returned later with two pizzas. we shared the first pizza with the protesters who weren't attending the group lunch afterwards, and another man showed up with his small child handing out drinks. zane and i ended up the last two protesters there & shared the pizza and drinks with a homeless man. afterwards we had to go to a different part of town, and i ended up giving two other homeless people two slices and each & some drinks. today was a good day & it's always a good day to remember to build a longer table.

morning, bluesky! yesterday was very monday ™️. i hope today is kind to us all, i hope today is a day that works towards solution. one that inspires courage and integrity in us all, but namely those in power.
