"Killdeer get their name from the shrill, wailing kill-deer call they give so often," according to the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. "Eighteenth-century naturalists also noticed how noisy Killdeer are, giving them names such as the Chattering Plover and the Noisy Plover."

Next month, Commission staff members will visit several additional properties that were permanently preserved through the Pinelands Conservation Fund. The site visits enable staff to monitor current conditions at those properties.

The acquisition was a cooperative effort among the Commission, Atlantic County, and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Green Acres program.

The Commission in July 2009 provided $300,000 from its Pinelands Conservation Fund to Atlantic County, which used the money toward its purchase of the land in Hamilton Township.
