Disappointed to see so many people arguing that FAs don't deserve higher pay "bc overtime hours are normal in other industries" and "bc they don't have degrees." Just because something is normalized doesn't mean it's okay.

I'm sorry but you should not need to take a tourism flight to space to realize how important it is that we address the climate crisis and save our planet.

#Canada celebrates diversity.

This is a comment I'm seeing all over social media lately. I worry that these comments come from a place of privilege.

In the 2022 provincial election #Ontario recorded the lowest voter turnout in the province's history. Only 43.5 percent of eligible voters cast their vote. Ontario, we cannot repeat this. Yes, first past the post is a problem, and we need reform. But complacency will get us nowhere.

I've had a few DMOs and tourism boards tell me they don't want to work with me because they don't have eco-friendly options on offer, or they aren't pushing messaging around responsible travel. I think that too many of us in tourism overthink what "responsible tourism" really means.

I don't know who needs to hear this but no, you don't need to use ChatGPT for everything.

A search on ChatGPT uses nearly 10x the energy that a Google search does.

I've been seeing a lot of aesthetic content of Tbilisi lately, which I love to see bc Georgia deserves way more tourism love. But something the content lacks is any mention of what is happening in Georgia politically.

The United States has declared economic war on its closest ally — showing no one is safe from the declining superpower as it lashes out.
And away we go.

President Trump launched a trade war against Canada Saturday by imposing a 25% tariff on virtually all good from the U.S.'s neighbour — an unprecedented strike against a longstanding ally that has the potential to throw the economy into a tailspin

Travel Content Creators: In 2025, let's create travel content that respects the places we visit, and encourages our communities to travel in a way that's better for people, and for the planet.

In the last year, I've stopped using the word "destination" in my travel writing and in my content. Why? Because I don't want to contribute to the marketing jargon that positions countries and cultures as something to consume, as commodities.

I really hope that this year, DMOs and #tourismboards carefully review the people they work with. I hope that they choose to work with creators that are modeling a more mindful approach to tourism.

When I was around 21, I had a chat in a hostel with a guy about "off the beaten path" travel. He raved about how he'd gone traveling in Indonesia on a budget, hitchhiking, camping, & asking to stay with locals along the way.

Always have an emergency fund when you travel - whether it's a 2 week trip or full-time travel. Surprise events happen on your travels, and having a pot of money set aside for these moments will give you peace of mind.
January 17, 2025 at 3:34 PM
Always review the itineraries that DMOs/tourism boards send you!

I learned this lesson last year when I found myself on a media trip that was so rushed, I felt stressed in trying to capture all the content and notes I needed to cover it well.

Travel privileges you may not know you have:

➡️ Passport privilege
➡️ Socio-economic privilege
➡️ Accessibility privilege
➡️ Language privilege
➡️ Gender privilege

Don't ever take your ability to travel for granted.
