Thanks so much to all the participants, speakers and performers who we've been lucky enough to work with this year, and to @slaslatam.bsky.social for their support.

And a massive thanks to all the PILAS committee members who made all of these activities work as well as they did! 9/

Finally, we tied up the year with an amazing evening exploring sonic histories of Latin American folk with Color Sudaka, Colectiva Sonera de los Valles Centrales de Oaxaca and Andrea Martínez. Great music and great dancers! 8/

Happy July all 🌞

We're pleased to invite expressions of interest to take the reins for the 2025/26 PILAS committee. We're looking for six PGRs in UK-based institutions to fill four officer roles and two ordinary member roles. See below for details!

Just a few days away now. We're looking forward to welcoming you all to PILAS 2025! For those of you in Bristol, keep an eye out around campus for our posters 👀

Finally, we're glad to announce a workshop by Latinas in Bristol, who will share their history and work within the city's Latin community. Expect traditional dances performed by Latin Folk, as well as the chance to engage in traditional Brazilian textile art: fuxico. Exciting!

This year we are also proud to exhibit the work of Venezuelan artist and fellow postgraduate student Ronald Pizzoferrato. This will showcase a selection of images from his project The Path of the Objects, a visual examination of Venezuela’s migration crisis.
March 26, 2025 at 5:16 PM
As a prelude, we're also proud to be presenting fellow postgrad Andrés Prypchan’s restoration work of Araya, comprising 22 mins of previously unseen footage from Benacerraf's discards. We'll be holding a Q&A with Andrés, delving into the technical aspects of his restoration work.
March 20, 2025 at 5:01 PM
Very excitingly, we'll also be screening Margot Benacerraf's 1959 seminal film Araya. The film captures a pivotal moment in the nation’s history, when the centuries-old extraction of salt—once known as “white gold”—was eclipsed by the rise of oil, Venezuela’s “black gold.”

We're delighted to have as our second keynote @alejandrodecoss.bsky.social, lecturer in Urban Geography at the Uni of Edinburgh. Alejandro's talk will draw from his own long-term ethnographic work in Mexico City to explore what it means to think infrastructural labour as method and practice.
March 17, 2025 at 9:52 AM
A huge welcome to our first of two keynote speakers: Carlos F. Grigsby, Nicaraguan-born poet and lecturer at the Uni of Bristol. In his keynote Carlos will address scholarly research as academic activism and reconciling "Global South" perspectives with Anglo-European academia.
