Every once in a while I rewatch Plagiarism and You(tube) and I can't help searching James Somerton. As far as I can tell he's completely disappeared which is probably for the best.

I've been using 1/4 teaspoon prewash and 1/2 teaspoon main cycle and it still works. This stuff is insanely powerful.

That is one of my favorite movies. I would need to consider all sorts of real world practicalities like "how would health insurance work?" or "can I get extra drivers licenses?" and I could see getting talked out of it. But in the abstract yes absolutely.

Okay that's your choice and I don't have a problem with it. Depending on specifics not handled in a simple thought experiment I probably would do it. Neat.

You are probably right that such people exist but I am living proof that being interested in consciousness uploading does not imply holding that position.
December 28, 2025 at 2:07 AM
Okay again I'm not arguing for any sort of FTL. I'm saying I believe an exact copy has the same identity as the original. You and I read different physical copies of the same book we still read the same book.
December 28, 2025 at 2:04 AM
Anyway your original point was that believing in consciousness uploading required substance dualism. I disagree.
December 28, 2025 at 1:59 AM
You seem to be stuck on thinking of the whole thing from the perspective of the mind that stays in the original body. That one might be pissed at losing the coin toss. But the you that decides to have the procedure will become both versions.
December 28, 2025 at 1:57 AM
The one on earth woke up no better off so he didn't benefit, but the one on Neptune gets a cool robot body and gets to explore Neptune. From the perspective of the pre-copy person both of these things are going to happen to some version of me.
December 28, 2025 at 1:48 AM
When the robot is turned on it becomes conscious. When the human body on earth wakes up it also becomes conscious. Both conscious people have a valid claim to being me. Because I don't believe in a soul or anything like it I am comfortable saying that they both *are* me.
December 28, 2025 at 1:48 AM
My consciousness doesn't FTL to Neptune. Your consciousness doesn't exist when you aren't conscious. The data of my mind travels at whatever speed the information transfer happens to Neptune.
December 28, 2025 at 1:48 AM
Okay it's a fair point. I've been working under the assumption that the scan can't be done while you are conscious. You go to sleep (or are sedated), the scan is done, and then two of you wake up.
December 28, 2025 at 1:32 AM
Well they would have to get a copy of your mind to alpha centauri so the copy would be out of date. So no the version of you who remembers the time after the copy was made would not have any chance of waking up light-years away. The version of you who was copied does.
December 28, 2025 at 1:27 AM
You are intuitively taking the perspective of the instance of you that stays in the original body but that's an incomplete picture. From the perspective of the other instance of your mind the transfer worked perfectly and the old you is bummed that they didn't get the immortal body.
December 27, 2025 at 1:54 PM
This is the thing, there *is* a 50% chance that you wake up as the clone. There are two of you, both with valid claim to your identity. 1 out of 2, or 50%, of the minds that are you find themselves in the clone.
December 27, 2025 at 1:47 PM
"Cloned" or "duplicated" inherently assumes that both people aren't you. From each mind's perspective they are the original. One of them remembers being you and found themselves in a robot body, the other found themselves in the flesh. Would you take a 50/50 chance to wake up immortal tomorrow?
December 27, 2025 at 12:50 AM
I'm not sure about "most people" and I doubt you are either. I am a non dualist who doesn't think uploading my mind will be possible in my lifetime but would absolutely do it if the option was available. I don't see it as a doppelganger, more like I would be split in two.
December 26, 2025 at 10:27 PM
The same argument can be made for my future self after a night of sleep. The me of tomorrow will remember being me and believe he is me, but there will be a break in continuity. Why should I care what happens to him?

The Kennedys would probably still win this in an election. if it was up to me it would be the Green brothers.

The reverse adapter would need its own power source and would need to be in two parts since the compact cassette doesn't usually stick out of the player like 8-tracks do. I'm not saying no one ever sold one but between the added cost, complexity, and bulk it's hard to see that as a viable product.
November 20, 2025 at 7:08 PM
You could always plug a cassette adapter like Alec uses in the video into the headphone jack of an 8 track player. But a reverse adapter as a single product would be very odd.

That's actually one of the leading theories as to why multi cellular life kept evolving. It's an anti predation tactic.
