The next weekend, Shen Shen gets them tickets to the ABT. Shen Shen hadn’t been sure if Han Ying would even want to watch dance, given how unsure he’d felt about his recent audition. But he’d immediately said yes when Shen Shen invited him, and after some light ribbing about how good the seats are and how much Shen Shen must have spent on them last-minute, he spends the performance sat straight-backed, eyes alert and shining, hand occasionally shifting on the armrest in time with the music. Afterwards, he lets out a long breath, and his shoulders relax, and Shen Shen squeezes his hand, quickly, when Han Ying thanks him for bringing him. Afterwards, Han Ying takes him to a bar he likes, down on the edge of the theater district. It’s not exactly a gay bar - not that Shen Shen’s been to many of those - but it’s also not not a gay bar. Most of the patrons are men, many of them dressed like Shen Shen and Han Ying, like they’ve just come from one performance or another. They’re mostly in pairs or little groups clustered around the small tables. The few men there on their own seem more interested in reading Playbills or chatting with the bartender than in picking each other up. One, nursing a g&t and writing notes on a stenographer’s pad, must be a critic. The bartender knows Han Ying, at least enough to ask if they’ve come from the ballet. He eyes up Shen Shen, but doesn’t say anything, except a “You got it, boss” when Shen Shen orders a scotch.

just finally opened it and gasped in joy, because I knew Kitchen Goose would be in there, but I forgot all about my beloved Duckie Light.

I just went back to the post on IG and saw this!!

I also saw someone saying the final sign might be a variant ASL sign for beautiful, but like you said, KSL or ISL seems more likely.

Also not sure what live they’re referring to, maybe Big Ocean did one somewhere?
Instagram comment by user thatdeafweaver, replying to three other commenters: they spelled “xlov" in asl and the other sign at the end is in ksl. they showed that sign on their live and if my captions and lip reading were correct they said it means "gorgeous" in ksl. the asl sign for "beautiful/gorgeous" is also near the face but looks quite different. wumuti also signed "thank you" in ksl at the beginning and end

the Shen Shen / Han Ying @stilloranged.bsky.social NYC-verse is getting random details and half-scenes filled in
Shen Shen does take a car when he goes to pick up Han Ying the next weekend, and ends up standing on a cracked sidewalk beside a relatively small pile of full garbage bags, ringing a bell in a doorway between a laundromat and a Dominican grocery. The bells are labeled with taped-on bits of paper varying ages and legibilities, a few names just written on the metal in Sharpie. Whoever’s name was on Han Ying’s unit has long since worn off entirely, but Han Ying warned him about that, and he has a slip of paper in his pocket with the apartment number on it, just to be sure. “Yeah?” a voice asks through the intercom. Shen Shen thinks he recognizes it from the phone, but it’s hard to tell through the scratchy speaker. “Hi, uh - I’m here for Han Ying? I’m early.” Way too early, awkwardly early. “Right - YING,” the voice yells away from the intercom, and the speaker cuts off. Shen Shen shoves his hands in his pockets and looks at his feet as an older lady walks by with her shopping trolley bouncing along on the pavement, feeling out of place in his overcoat and a pair of boots he bought because Xie’er said he was tired of seeing his ‘Midtown office shoes’ at openings. He feels like he waits longer than it should take to come downstairs, even from a fourth-floor walkup, but then the door pushes open with a unlocking clunk and Han Ying’s standing there in a t-shirt and sweats and slides, hair wet, smiling at him. “Sorry,” he says, “I was in the shower.” “I’m sorry,” Shen Shen counters. “We left time for traffic, but there wasn’t any, they cleared that construction near the bridge, and -” “It’s okay,” Han Ying says, and reaches out for him, tugs him towards the door, which he’s holding open with his body. “Where’s your driver?” “Oh - it’s Frank tonight - he said he’d find somewhere to park - I was just going to stay with him, but he said that was stupid and, uh. That you’d be glad to see me.” Han Ying laughs softly. “I am.” He gives the most cursory glance around before kissing Shen Shen on the cheek, then says “Come in, already.”

I’m pretty dang sure the guy with his head so nicely pillowed is the one who’s been prominently featured in his dance team and videos all year.

The hotel I was aiming for was full and I got one of the last rooms in another place that is simply bursting with teenaged farmers. To which user dark-shining-ness, who the screenshot shows I did not follow, replied ‘Sounds like an episode of West Wing’ and tagged in Bradley Whitford.
