Killdeer, Vancouver (BC), Canada. IUCN 3.1: Near threatened. Unfortunately, many shorebirds fall in this category (or worse), due to climate change and habitat loss. #birds

Cooper's Hawk (juvenile) in Montreal. This summer, my son and I were very happy to spend a few minutes with this handsome bird! And while I normally don't include human constructs in my bird photos, birds in urban settings remind us that they have to adapt to cities. IUCN 3.1: Least concern. #birds

Ring-necked Duck, taken at a local pond in Vancouver (when we lived there). One of the most absurdly named ducks -- and there are several of those! although for once the "ring" around the neck is visible (it usually isn't). IUCN 3.1: Least concern. #birds

I mostly post photos of birds, but found this beautiful Papilio polyxenes, aka (eastern) black swallowtail in Montreal this summer and wanted to share. Although IUCN considers this to be a species of "least concern," many butterfly species are threatened by habitat loss and climate change.
