In a single 2.4 liter sample from the Great Barrier Reef we found rRNA sequences indicating over 300 species of dinoflagellates. I worried about artifacts, but it has been borne out by more recent work.

There is sooooo much microbial diversity out there (eukaryotic, archaeal, and bacterial, plus their viruses) that we know next to nothing about.
