Thought I was the last one finally getting it done last night.

See? The mildest disagreement is met with a sort of frothing anger, cheered on by reassuring, soothing engagement metrics that encourages this "bromides for friends, hate for all others" style. It is genuinely weird to see it in action. In a blind "taste test" who wouldn't prefer AI to this?
December 14, 2024 at 5:39 PM
I don't like some of the specific AI products I see. However, I am struck by how totally incurious the knee jerk hate responses are. It reminds me exactly of what you see in populist conservative MAGA type spaces, just not as evil. And their arguments are often bromides on the level of "MAGA"

Got it, thanks!

I agree re pre-existing conditions, but I'm wondering why smoking is different? Is it because it's just a much bigger risk factor than anything else, or because smoking is a discrete behavior whereas obesity is the result of a combination of behaviors?
December 14, 2024 at 3:29 PM
The claim health insurance makes you fat does seem ridiculous. The idea that obese people should pay more for insurance seems like a separate issue if we otherwise think it's normal for high risk populations (e.g. smokers) to pay more, and I just didn't know if that's how insurance pricing works
December 14, 2024 at 3:21 PM
ok thanks for clarifying, I guess I just wasn't sure what the connection was between the policy recommendation and the empirical claims of the paper shown. They seem at least in principle separable.
December 14, 2024 at 3:11 PM
They aren't self driving, the original poster you quoted apparently didn't read the article he posted.
December 14, 2024 at 2:55 PM
Is the issue that it's wrong to charge more for insurance for higher risk populations? Don't we already do that with smoking? It's not a rhetorical question I know nothing about how insurance pricing works.
December 14, 2024 at 2:46 PM
I don't actually agree with that as a general point, but it's definitely true in the case of cyber trucks
December 14, 2024 at 2:36 PM
Hilarious troll move to include the Lakers in an article about title contenders/hopefuls.
December 14, 2024 at 1:34 PM
Just not sure if it's worth it for GSW to lose some decent players/assets for 1-2 seasons of this version of LeBron. Maybe it's worth it for LAL if it's part of a plan to also dump AD and commit to tanking. Hard to say, but it would definitely be cool to see Steph+LeBron for fans at least.
December 13, 2024 at 10:48 PM
Setting aside the "Steph and LeBron!!" factor it honestly feels like both sides should say no to any feasible deal
December 13, 2024 at 10:03 PM
What a disgraceful decision, and how pathetic and lost is anyone who thinks Trump's villainy makes this somehow less worthy of reproach.
December 13, 2024 at 9:14 PM
Unfortunately Bsky does exactly the thing that makes X and all social media garbage over time: visible engagement metrics. It still just prizes cheers and boos over anything else. Nicer than X at least, provided you don't disagree with anyone about anything, but alas not the pre-"likes" web.

It's a fake screenshot. Funny though to imagine that they have enough in stock that they sold 100k of them and it's still available
December 11, 2024 at 10:19 PM
No worries! Glad to have helped. A funny theory is maybe it is Tenderness, and you misheard the mnemonic and Little Susie is alive and well. She dropped Ted.
December 11, 2024 at 3:15 PM
Mnemonic lol
December 11, 2024 at 2:54 PM
Pain, Irregularity, Loss of movement, Swelling, Deformity, Unnatural movement, Crepitus, Tenderness. So for your version, would just need a additional D word to replace Tenderness, or maybe they had some other symptom in mind.
December 11, 2024 at 2:48 PM
Possibly, but I don't know who that is. Hope they're an exception!

Gotta be a variant of PILSDUCT which is a pneumonic for symptoms of a fracture
December 11, 2024 at 2:35 PM
To be fair I can't think of a single thing in any domain of knowledge that is obvious pre-caffeine
December 11, 2024 at 1:03 PM
I genuinely can't think of a single person regularly on cable TV that isn't some amount of unpleasant and disingenuous. The platform is literally inconsistent with being thoughtful and fair.
December 11, 2024 at 4:52 AM
In the US context at least, I'm curious how you would square this claim with the fact that the constellation of views constitutive of left vs right has changed significantly over time.
December 11, 2024 at 12:29 AM
I really really appreciate the in depth answer, far better than I deserve. Ordinarily I'd just Google around but you can imagine how in this case that'd probably just lead me to some horrible corners of the Internet. Thanks again!
