Bikes, transportation, urbanism, San Francisco, freight. Mostly lurk, maybe will post more here
The treasure island multi-use path wins the crown here— $100mil for ~1.5 miles. It requires 30+ ft of retaining wall and environmental mitigation to prevent soil wash into the bay, among other feats of engineering.

The bike lane on 13th St (13th St Safety Project) is $15mil for 1/2 mile.

I’m getting a ton of these in SF. And today’s Mission Local comment section on SF democrats diverged into a strain of skepticism about the redistricting plan that doesn’t bode well (since you’d expect SF to deliver a pile of votes for this one).

S.F. Democratic Party: We believe in nothing
San Francisco's Democratic Party has worked diligently to even further diminish its influence and dilute its brand

GRT already chases low margin employers out of San Francisco and hits the commute trips BART depends on.

This should be a parcel tax because property owners benefit the most from the access and economic growth transit provides. Alas, I am not the median voter— a parcel tax polls even worse.

All political decisions involve tradeoffs and anyone who is saying policies improve _everyone’s_ life is lying or finding excuses to do nothing.

Change is hard and necessary, because the status quo (even in a place as amazing as the Sunset) ain’t all there could be.

Joel’s been a better supervisor than I expected when he was running. I thought his campaign was only telling people what they want to hear (probably why recall folks take the betrayed line so hard), but his decisions in office have been practical and focused on local quality of life.

They won’t be able to. That’s why the demand now has to be a clean reversal now. Lowering trade barriers 30 years ago was hard— these don’t incrementally get reversed (especially the tariffs on China)

Hannah Anderson PJs. Their prints almost pass as daytime clothes when my kids wear them all day. $50 retail, imported for $28 from India, subject to 26% tariff, $7.26.

My over-monitor desk light. My husband did all the research to find us a soft, diffuse light with a magnetic connection to your monitor. Made in China. $45 retail in 2023. ~$15 at import, now subject to additional 110% tariffs or $16.50. Currently listed on Amazon for $60.

Children’s program baddies used to be developers and polluters; now they’re mad scientists.

Market is a good scoot. Phase 1 of “Better” Market St is done, and the pavement is much higher quality from 5th to 8th. Watch the tracks for the first few blocks south from Embarcadero. Double parking can get dangerous on upper market (above Safeway), especially during going out hours.

I purchased our SF house from our landlords in July 2023 and haven’t had our re-assessment letter yet. But I know how to google the property tax rate on the price I paid, how to set aside money for a future expense, and how to put money into t-bills.

Amazon is still one of the better urbanist large employers. They built their campus downtown and not in the burbs, they require employees to pay for parking and run a shuttle network to supplement the public transit.

I attended one of their (many) public feedback about this program where they debated how to offer the rebate to the perfect person. I suggested a lottery and was dismissed. Turns out we got a lottery anyway, just two years later with some extra grift for consultants.
