Space is often known for its cold, its quiet, its desolation. Most things reduced to ice and rubble, from the rock to the skin to the cells, nothing left but an invisible, impossibly cold frost. But from centuries of damage to the radiators, the confines of the station only got hotter. The computers, the former lifeblood of the station, would slowly fry and cease operation. But redundancy was always at the core of spaceflight, back in those days. All those non essential systems, everything that wasn’t part of preventing the station from exploding and killing the researchers and test subjects, they were left to die while all the computers in the control center, all the systems that kept the station just barely what would be considered functional, they were what kept alive for hundreds of years, in a sense. More a permanent stasis, a fixture of cold nothingness, somewhere between alive and dead. The station remained. It burnt in the light of the sun, peppered with holes from micrometeoroids lovingly and violently kissing the hull, the solar panels, the radiators. A dying animal, coughing blood and coolant. Anybody looking would think it was all but dead. But it was alive, but it was dead, but it was something in between. It's impossible to tell. All indications told the mind it was looking at a corpse, at a wasteland, at a cold barren nothingness. Aluminum skin torn to reveal wire veins and a metal skeleton from years of cosmic pelting and decay. But to say it was dead was a lie, in some regards. Centuries of torment, an endless list of reasons to die. But it's not alone in its mortal immortality. Humanity was shocked when it first discovered life on Mars those hundred years ago despite all signs telling mother earth that it was alone in the universe. Our closest neighbor, a land of rust and carbon snow, now shared a unique commonality. Those microbes told humanity it was possible to live in the impossible.
