A loud Striated Grassbird this morning, a common resident in small numbers #birding 🪶

Great to see three Red-necked Stints this morning. It's a scarce autumn passage migrant inland here. These birds were with 50 Little Ringed Plovers and a few Common Sandpipers on rainwater pools created on recent landfill #shorebirds #birding 🪶

Poisoning, of both wild and domestic animals, is a major threat to the remaining populations of Cambodia's three resident vulture species

Hopefully this represents at least a stabilisation of Cambodia's Sarus Cranes, but still a horrible crash from the 869 recorded in 2011. Large scale conversion of breeding habitat, primarily to agriculture, was a significant driver of the decline

Autumn is here! Today this early migrant Tibetan Sand Plover was on a small patch of mud with the resident Little Ringed Plovers. It's a scarce visitor inland here, primarily in the autumn #shorebirds #birding 🪶

Found a pair of Indochinese Bushlark in a new location this morning. They were running around in the grass like buttonquails, and occasionally cocking their tails. Difficult to photograph until this one popped up briefly #birding 🪶

The Little Ringed Plovers are now gathering post-breeding, hopefully the habitat will remain and later next month they will be joined by the odd migrant sand plover or something else interesting #shorebirds #birding 🪶

Great to see a young Black-shouldered Kite this morning and know they have successfully bred on the patch again. The species is under increasing threat in Cambodia as fledglings are taken from the nest to feed a sadly growing fashion for keeping birds of prey 🪶

Red Avadavat is a rare wet season visitor. This pair this morning, the male in non-breeding plumage, showed a lot of yellow on the belly, but are of the red-bellied subspecies punicea

I came across a pair of Small Pratincoles with young chicks yesterday, great to see they have successfully bred again. One of them liked to hide in this construction pipe! #birding🪶

Some of the Oriental Pratincoles now have a second clutch. Came across this by chance this morning so took a a couple of quick shots and then left them alone 🪶

Probably my best ever views this morning of a pair of foraging Common (Small) Buttonquail. I think it is a relatively recent coloniser of the patch, and appears to occupy the same landfill grass/scrub areas as the far commoner Barred Buttonquail #birding 🪶
April 26, 2025 at 7:32 AM
Pheasant-tailed Jacana are flocking-up and coming into full breeding plumage before they disperse to breed during the wet season. Unfortunately they were just a little bit far for my camera 🪶 #birding
April 20, 2025 at 8:20 AM
A pair of Lesser Whistling Ducks have hung around for a few months now, usually just a wet season visitor, I wonder if this pair might try and breed? 🪶
April 16, 2025 at 4:59 AM
Patch tick! I wonder where a pair of Sooty-headed Bulbuls suddenly appeared from? It is a surprisingly scarce bird around Phnom Penh and it'll be interesting to see if they stick around #birding
April 14, 2025 at 7:38 AM
Multiple Black Bitterns this morning, it is a common wet-season breeding visitor between April and September. Most often I see them in flight, but they do occasionally sit out in the open like this 🪶
April 6, 2025 at 5:27 AM
Two pairs of Small Pratincole had returned to the colony this morning. Always great to see 🪶
April 5, 2025 at 5:15 AM
The Oriental Pratincoles are doing well and have young already. The colony seems smaller this year however, and the Small Pratincoles don't seem to have hung around to breed either #birding #eBird
March 29, 2025 at 5:13 AM
The White-browed Crakes are very active now with their squealing call a constant backdrop to the weekend's #birding. They are common here, particularly amongst the water hyacinth, and are about to start breeding 🪶
March 23, 2025 at 9:27 AM
Numbers of Oriental Darter are building again as they disperse post breeding. Numbers are increasing across the country as breeding colonies expand out from the Tonle Sap. This morning there were about 60, my peak has been over 80 birds in June #birding
March 15, 2025 at 6:40 AM
The chickens are taking over! Just back from a few days in downtown Singapore and in the last few years domestic origin Red Junglefowl have completely taken over the city centre. Some of the males look excellent, a lot of the females not so much
March 13, 2025 at 7:49 AM
A small colony of Blue-tailed Bee-eaters were excavating nest-holes this morning in a sand-face created by a new road construction. I have long suspected they breed somewhere close by, but these are the first nests I've found on the patch #birding
March 2, 2025 at 7:18 AM
Hadn't seen a Black-collared Starling on the patch for three years, I thought they had long gone along with the loss of agricultural land and cattle. But this characteristically noisy lone individual suddenly appeared to liven up this morning #birding
March 1, 2025 at 7:33 AM
There's a good waterbird roost now growing, primarily darter, night-heron, Grey Heron, plus assorted egrets, pond-herons and cormorants. Last week there was also a single Asian Openbill. The Grey Herons look like they might breed. It would be good to have a waterbird colony in downtown Phnom Penh 🪶
