Quattro feels like Char trying to live a “normal” life, but normal for him means being the cool ace pilot everyone looks up to. The issue is that everyone figures out his schtick and calls him a coward for not taking up a leadership role. Bright even talks about not wanting to let him pilot

It’s only when Mineva and Haman show up, and he learns that they’re STILL trying to pull the Zabi shit (dragging a child into it, nonetheless, something he can def relate to) that his extended crashout begins (and proceeds to last for like the entire second half of Zeta)

He genuinely seems to want to move on from the expectations placed upon him to be a leader or a politician, and just wants to be a pilot of a cool, gaudy, fast as fuck mobile suit for a cause he cares about. It takes a LOT of bullying to get him to the point where he makes that speech in Dakar.

I can’t imagine Char seeing himself as someone in need of “redemption” after the OYW. After all, he’s never betrayed anyone ever, and holds Amuro responsible for Lalah’s death. If anything, his backstory feels like baggage he’s trying to leave behind in favor of doing his own thing.
