Moss Landing, CA is a biological gem. Go kayak the Elkhorn Slough and you’ll see dozens of sea otters and harbor seals, an incredible variety of birds, and hundreds of nudibranchs in the sea grass.

Double crested cormorant and this chick is taking a deep dive for a meal… down its parent’s throat 😳

And here is the second largest piece of the moon ever found on Earth (!) just waiting for you on display at the Portland, Maine airport. What an epic mini museum they have there.

The pileated woodpeckers helping decorate my yard. We use logs rounds to line the trails and entryway, I always love the countdown to see when the woodpeckers start making their mark.

My backyard has bigger banana slugs than your back yard

My favorite hobby is finding tiny little camouflaged treasures in nature.

So much cuteness entered my life this week, excited to watch them all grow. Baby girl is named Fjora (like fjord + flora), and baby owl names are open to suggestions.

After seeing 10+ species of them I learned this weekend I may be obsessed with tropical tanagers. Saffron-crowned tanager and golden tanager, two surprisingly common birds amongst the mixed flocks of the Colombian cloud forest.

Some of the most spectacular hummingbirds I saw in Colombia over the weekend. Brown violetear, white-booted racket-tail, and the long-tailed sylph.

The birds of the cloud forests of Colombia are astounding. Had less than 24hrs to visit various hot spots outside of Cali this weekend, and wow did they show up.

Our boat happens to be anchored in the perfect position to see two faces in the cliff side.

Hello from the Colombian mountains

Spotted four (!) snowy owls along Duxbury Beach in Cape Cod Bay, Massachusetts.

The whooping crane— North America’s tallest bird which is also one of its most endangered. Coming in at 5 feet tall, the population was once down to fewer than 20 individuals and is now ~800

On this day I saw 16 or 17 of them, meaning I have now seen 2% of all whooping cranes that exist!

Some serendipity in this world. In Texas for work, drove for 2 hrs on my off day to go see some birds. Stopped at an old oak tree and ran into two of my favorite entomology professors from Cornell University who also drove for hours while being in Texas for work! We were only ones out in the rain.

Dungeness crab from diving in the Puget Sound, chanterelle mushroom flush in my yard, and caddisfly in the snow. A quick burst of nature at home in Washington before taking off again, this time heading to Texas.

Christmas Day tradition here in the Puget Sound, freediving for Dungeness crab Christmas dinner. Got our daily max today, beautiful visibility down there.

VERY EXCITED to see a special little spider I discovered in Peru make it to the big screen. Check out The Secret Lives of Animals episode 3 on Apple TV.

Wife made bow-tie shaped cardamom buns but all I see are cute edible jumping spiders.

Then there’s this, which could explain everything including the muffled and unclear government response, but gov should do better and let people know before someone shoots down a normal aircraft.

First time *really* seeing northern lights while filming in cold cozy Norway. Could actually see the green whipping back and forth! Didn’t realize how fleeting they are, brilliant one minute and backed off the next.

Genuinely curious why there aren’t more green living roofs on homes in the US, but they are all over here in Norway on old and modern homes alike.
December 7, 2024 at 5:51 PM
Mid day walk in northern Norway to set up some camera traps and see who shows up. So many tracks in the snow, it’s like seeing the night’s history written in white.

Very honored to see my glitter weevil image turned into an epic tattoo. Love spotting entomological tattoos in the wild!
