If we want more than a bandaid on the housing crisis, the next increment of development should be legalized by right in every neighborhood across North America.

Illustration comparing incremental intensification vs. sudden intensification. Under incremental intensification, houses get built up in a few stages towards a denser neighborhood. Under sudden intensification, those same houses are eliminated and replaced with big housing projects in one stage. This is meant to show that incremental intensification can be more flexible and responsive, whereas sudden intensification completely wipes out existing housing to replace it with something that is less flexible.
