In Maasai culture, these leaders act as community representatives, and he was upset that no one had informed him of our presence. Once reassured of our intentions, he was happy to let us continue on our way.

After several minutes, the man’s demeanour suddenly changed. Smiling broadly, he shook our hands and bid us farewell before retreating inside. The guide explained that this man was one of the local leaders, responsible for a group of around ten households.

our shoes and trousers were already completely filly by the dust anyway. About halfway down, a man emerged from his house, clearly displeased. Our guide engaged him in what seemed to be a tense conversation in the Maasai language. We hung back, waiting for the exchange to unfold

It didn’t take long to realise just how steep the climb would be. Though we were only ascending the lower slopes, the incline felt relentless. Jackson and Anna’s property sat at 1,652 meters (5,420 feet), while the water junction was at approximately 1,717 meters (5,633 feet)

as we were considering providing additional funding to support the community’s own contributions. As this funding would come from the charity I was involved in, I was particularly keen to understand how the project would also benefit the children of the community.

We weren’t even allowed to nip through the gate to turn the car around safely. Instead, they insisted on a 35-point turn, trying to avoid all the tourist shops that were set up very tightly on either side of the single-lane road to the gateway.

how far we had come, our historical connection to the area, and if we could just nip through to have a quick look at the waterfall. Sadly, the outcome was negative; they either wanted full payment to use the car park or a pay-off, which we weren’t prepared to give.

As we were already on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro and so close to one of the entry gates where people go to start their climbs to the top of the mountain, we went to have a look at it. There is a waterfall just the other side of the gate, so we hoped to quickly nip in
