Dad, sci-fi writer, ML curmudgeon, the Phantom of the Opera of game dev. Doing AI stuff at Google DeepMind.
I watch football but I don't actually know anything so I just roll in and say "who are these guys in the [color] jerseys? Are they any good?" and everybody is like "yeah" or "no" and then I go make myself a sandwich.

Saves me a lot of reading and, presumably, stress.

I've been spending time with notebooklm.google

Specifically I've been using it as an aid for reading papers. I have it generate "audio deep dives" for individual papers and find a) it's not perfect but b) it gives me some scaffolding for understanding. Has anyone else been using this thing?

I'm going to NeurIPS this year. On the one hand, I am excited for the camaraderie and inspiration and sense of wonder and discovery.

On the other, I kinda don't want to be thousands of miles from home right now.

Got to my polling place this morning at 5:45am and there were already six people in line. Dozens right now as the polls are about to open. I've never seen more than a handful of people at this polling spot at any time on election day.

Hooray for turnout.

When I was a kid I was bored all the time, and that drove me to invent things.

Now I have all these options for not-boredom (Streaming! Social Media! Work!) and I'm just like... I think I should try to be bored again

I read "Leave the World Behind" yesterday. Honestly, I found it deeply creepy. Yes, the story, the apocalypse, the allegories, are all disturbing (the allegories deserved a better book). But I couldn't shake the impression that the author shouldn't be left alone with kids.

I am getting a couple suits tailored for a friend's wedding, and there is something pure about standing on a platform in pieces of a half-finished suit thinking about how happy and healthy your friend seems

Showing my friend Nilay around Google NYC and I'm like... I need a better picture face. All I've got are "oh no, the sun!" and "I am blurry because I'm laughing"
