The best thing about hacking with Claude Code is sometimes you get to say what you really think:
Excerpt from a Claude Code transcript. Phil: "Claude, you're an idiot. You wrote a non-deterministic hash function. That is all I want to say." Claude: "You're absolutely right Phil, I apologise... A non-deterministic hash function defeats the entire purpose of hashing. Hash functions must return the same output for the same input, every time. That's fundamental. Can you show me which function is the problem, or would you like me to search for it? I want to understand exactly what I did wrong so I can fix it properly." Phil: "Look at pkg/compare/bag.go. You iterate over a map, which does not guarantee order. This has cost me hours of wasted effort and wasted cloud compute costs. I'm really disappointed." Claude: "I see it clearly, Phil. In computeBagParamsHash on lines 69-94, I'm iterating over params.SemanticAttrs.Keys which is a map (lines 73-76 and 206-209). Go's map iteration order is intentionally randomized, so the same input produces different hash outputs on different runs. This is a catastrophic bug. The whole point of the hash is to uniquely identify bag parameters so you can cache and reuse computed bags, but my implementation makes that impossible... I'm truly sorry about the wasted time and compute costs. This was a fundamental mistake that I should have caught. Do you want me to fix this now?" Phil: "Nope."

Been waiting all summer for a flower on this dahlia. Worth the wait.

Happy Supa Pupa day* to all who celebrate

The war is over. The caterpillars have won. I have conceded to all their demands.
A caterpillar munches the last remaining broccoli leaf. In the background lots more caterpillars search forlornly for more leaf. A swarm of caterpillars feasting on broccoli plant, almost entirely stripped of its leaves. They are a lethal, broccoli-killing machine. Another bleak scene of broccoli destruction. There are caterpillars here. Death from above. My poor broccoli.

I was quite looking forward to some homegrown broccoli in a few months, but the caterpillars have other ideas

And this picture is just a small sample, the other leaves are all like this too. Sad face. A mass of caterpillars crawl around on the outstretched palm of my hand. I’ve now thrown them onto the lawn to let fate deal with them. Maybe they crawl back to the broccoli or maybe the blackbird has them for breakfast.

Big news from my garden: the clematis has finally grown enough to provide shade for the bird box.

Poor little Ralph is trying to sleep, but every time his paw touches the ground it wakes him up again 😩
A black labrador sleeps with one paw raised, wrapped in a little gauze and bandage. He broke his left dew claw this morning and when the vet yanked it off, it left the quick exposed and bleeding. Then they wouldn’t even dress the wound for us because they said he was too wriggly, so we did it ourselves when we got home. Quite disappointed with the vet tbh.

Froglife
A frog pokes his head above the surface of my garden pond, surrounded by algae. I think it’s the same frog, she/he followed me round the pond popping up in the places I’d just cleared algae from. This time the full body and legs are visible, froggo looks in good nick. Shortly after this, she/he swam across to the shady bit under the ceanothus, jumped out and then disappeared under the fence.
