At one point in my childhood I was real good at Ninja Gaiden II to the point where when I came to my friends house he wanted me to play so he could watch and memorize it. Easily my proudest accomplishment in gaming as I am not that great at nonn-sports video games

It is so good. Loved the game but the cut scenes completely hooked me. It is so hard... which was perfect for when it was released as you didn't want a game that was super easy... you wanted replay value. Required 100% memorization to beat the game. Get hit once and you might as well start all over

Like the first Gears of war. Or early Halo games. Just go shoot stuff.

No I get it. I like Borderlands 1 and 2 a lot. But also at some point all the side quests just started being the exact same quest.

Action games would have to go back to old school style though. Not 2-D... but just straight action. No mucking about trying to open lockers to find ammo. Contra Style.

It is why I had a hard time getting into FF IX. Every moment I thought I was getting into the game another very long cut scene.

"Oh, you have been in 10 fights... time for another long cut scene"

For gameplay? Or does that include gameplay + cinematic cutscenes. Cause otherwise you might only get 40 minutes of gameplay in that case.

note: I really dislike cinematic cut scenes

I would also say Menu Systems. A complicated hard to use in game menu system can ruin an otherwise good game. Just as awesome audio can enhance a game.
