It's not true the suit is inherently conservative. Prior to the 1970s, tailoring was the uniform of the bourgeoisie, which included progressives, conservatives, and radicals. Many challenged conservative beliefs of their day (e.g., racial hierarchies, capitalism, imperialism, religious morality)

In fact, the history of working-class rebellion often intersects with tailors and shoemakers. Shoemaker Thomas Preston advocated for common ownership of land & democratic equality between sexes. Shoemakers were also behind the 1820 Cato Street Conspiracy, where they tried to kill the Prime Minister
