Burning is visually stunning. So many long shots of wide landscapes. The most decisive moment happens in one of those distant, wide shots. While the film is often quiet, the performances are always absorbing. The disparities between the wealthy and the non-wealthy are captured by their surroundings.

2019 House of Hummingbird is a quiet coming-of-age film. Writer and director Kim Bora says that hummingbirds are the smallest birds, but they go far to find nectar. In 1994 14-year-old Eun Hee has a family that can’t offer her much. She looks for connection but is repeatedly disappointed.

I’m participating in the year-long challenge from #Kmovieguy over on TT to watch 52 Korean movies. My first movie was 2011’s Sunny. This movie blended memories of the 80s with the current moment and reflected on friendship and growing up. Funny and poignant moments. Loved the fight/protest scene.

Day 10 EYDC: A Kdrama I rewatched: I rewatched Hotel del Luna and a Korean Odyssey. Both are gorgeous stories with stunning imagery and amazing actors. I skipped the endings of both this time around, though I so enjoyed the trip to get there.

Day 9 EYDC: a drama from another year: I enjoyed 2022’s Under the Queen’s Umbrella. So many good performances, especially from the women in this kdrama. I know it was criticized for its lack of historical fidelity to roles and behavior, but it was beautiful to watch and full of suspense.

Day 8 EYDC (I’m behind): I misread this as standout secondary character actor, so I’m going to roll with that and say Chun Ho-jin. I saw him back-to-back in Joseon Attorney and Park’s Marriage Contract. He has a wonderful voice and an amazing range, villainous to charming. Glad for his Kdrama skills

EYDC Day 7 Fav Character of 2023: Gu San-Yeong in The Revenant played by Kim Tae-Ri. After finding out that her family has many secrets, San-Yeong perseveres through sudden revelations, great loss, and existential danger. Glad I started watching on a holiday, because I couldn’t stop! #Kdrama

EYDC day 6 A Kdrama I Dropped: a high priest in another dimension swaps bodies with an idol in S Korea and has to figure out idol life while dealing with an evil force in both dimensions. The drama starred the excellent Kim Min Gyu and Go Bo Gyeol. I made it to ep 9 of Heavenly Idol. Disappointing.

Day 5 of kdrama challenge from @anniedelavoye.bsky.social: a visually beautiful drama in 2023: Tales of the Nine-Tailed 1938: I loved the exterior shots, the interior sets, the costumes. The cast members were generally gorgeous. All round beautiful visuals.

Day 3 of kdrama challenge from @anniedelavoye.bsky.social: favorite actor discovered in 2023: Choi Hyun-Wook was a delight in Twinkling Watermelon and Weak Hero Class 1. He manages to be funny and poignant and serious when he needs to be. He’s a stand out for me.

Day 2 in the kdrama challenge: favorite actress found in 2023. There were several, but I especially enjoyed Go Young-Jung in Alchemy of Souls and Moving. She made a big impression and I’m looking forward to seeing her in other roles soon.

Day 1: My first K-drama was Kingdom in 2020. The actors were so good, the costumes were stunning, the plot was so well paced. It was shot beautifully. I loved it so much.
