Helen Faison was born in Homewood in 1924. She received a bachelor's in education in 1946. In 1960, she became Pittsburgh's first Black guidance counselor and in 1968, its first Black teacher. In 1975 she got a doctorate in educational administration. She retired in 1993.

In 1847, Martin Delany met with Frederick Douglas and William Lloyd Garrison in Pittsburgh. In 1850, he was among the first Black men to attend Harvard Medical School. An educator, newspaper writer and editor, as well as abolitionist and physician, Delany later served in the Union army.

A barber shop and real estate entrepreneur, Lemuel Goggins became the first Black city council member in Pittsburgh in 1881. In 1915 when he died, he was reportedly worth $200,000 (worth about $6.3 million today).
