And it'll never see the light of day? Is this the Looney Tune film all over again?

As someone who used to work in rights - this stuff always makes me sad. Sign the contract! (whoever needs to)

10) At the end, I'm just happy to an amazing story that wasn't ONLY a coming out story (especially featuring teenagers) and wasn't about HIV - the only 2 storylines gay men have gotten since the 80s. This was all about the romance (and sex! Actual, hot sex!) and it was about time.

9) Publishing has long underestimated the buying power of gay men - mlm romance is a genre dominated by straight women, and the biggest selling gay-lead titles of the past decade are both written by women (ACHILLES and A LITTLE LIFE).

And by the time it will, the buzz will have faded, resulting in lower sales. The Amazon orders will help - but the only hope now is Season Two. As someone who wants gay media to succeed, if I don't see bookends next year, I'll be mad. And they better not be filled with straight hockey romances.

7) But at the end of the day, it's the idea that the biggest piece of gay media that has captured the mainstream's attention in YEARS doesn't have the books available is egregious. This series should have bookend, face-out placement at B&N, BAM, and indies and it just....doesn't.

6) The issue here is that it's hard to tell if a TV or movie adaptation will actually sell books - it's becoming rarer and rarer that it is. This is why there are fewer and fewer "movie tie-in editions" that end up in the bargain bin. They used to sell in buttloads, but they just don't anymore.

5) But Harlequin (the original publisher of the books, via their digital-first imprint Carina) is a Canadian publisher, now owned by US company HarperCollins. You think they would have at least printed more for Canada, but US and Canadian printings are usually the same.

4) HBO and international licenses didn't come through until the last minute - or even after the TV show premiered and the internet got ahold of the lead actor's butts (looking at the UK, specifically).

3) Since covid, multiple printers across the world have closed down. This means that publishing houses are booking printing lines months in advance - and that any last minute printing (which a reprint of this size would be) is going to be hard to fulfill and likely expensive.

2) There's a bunch of reasons why the books weren't printed enough, so I'm going to go through a few of them. First, TV production companies want to do their own thing - rarely do the TV people actually tell the book people (who made their thing possible) what is going on.

Marvel: I miss Kid Juggernaut and Cap of the Railways already.
DC: I almost love that they let Jon Kent break up with his first love. (looking at you, Wiccan and Hulkling. You are too young to marry! At least let them be open!)
