Breaking Barriers to Sustainable Rice Cultivation: Insights from the SRP Global Rice Conference in Bangkok Our planet urgently needs sustainably grown rice, but farmers often face knowledge gaps and legal barriers that hinder this critical transition. The Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP) sets the standard for sustainable rice cultivation, addressing significant concerns like the large greenhouse gas emissions caused by methane from flooded paddy fields and the health risks associated with burning rice straw after harvest. In the long run, transitioning to sustainable practices can lead to higher yields and require fewer inputs than traditional rice farming. However, the initial costs of this transition can be a substantial obstacle. In countries like Indonesia, fixed rice prices for farmers and consumers create barriers to compensating these costs. The Indonesian Rice Millers and Traders Association (PERPADI) is now urging for change. At the SRP Global Rice Conference, their Chairman, Sutarto Alimoeso, stated, "The Indonesian Rice Millers and Traders Association finds it urgent to introduce SRP in Indonesia. We see SRP as a critical tool to continue increasing rice production, become more climate-resilient, and meet local consumption needs." Our Indonesian Low Carbon Rice project, funded by EU SWITCH-Asia Programme, brought stakeholders from the Indonesian Ministry of Agriculture, the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas), and the National Food Agency (Bapanas), along with representatives from the Indonesia National Working Group for the Sustainable Rice Platform (SRP), to attend the conference. They met with global SRP leaders in Bangkok to discuss Indonesia’s rice sector and its sustainable transformation.
