Yes, that concept is also interesting. But most of those proposals are for short term storage where they compete more directly with Li-ion. Standard Thermal's idea is unique in their brutal capex reduction that would make it work for seasonal storage,

My favorite LDES is Standard Thermal's approach. They are exploring storing heat at 600 C in piles of dirt. Piling up dirt can cost as little as $1/ton, cheaper than almost anything else. They project capex of $0.10 per kWh(th) of storage capacity, losses < 1%/month at megawatt scale.

They changed the formula because they determined the most common reason for breakage was non-thermal, and tempered soda-lime was better for that. I do remember old PYREX measuring cups were prone to chips and losing handles.
